The flag of North Rhine-Westphalia is a national emblem . It is the flag of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia established by the law on the state colors, the state coat of arms and the state flag of March 10, 1953 . § 1 initially determines:

"The national colors are green - white - red ."

These colors are a combination of the provincial colors of the Rhineland (green and white) and the flag of Westphalia (white and red).

About the national flag, § 3 says:

“The national flag consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width, green above, white in the middle, red below. The ratio of the height to the length of the flag is like three to five. "

The state service flag, the use of which is reserved exclusively for the North Rhine-Westphalian state authorities, is described in Section 4:

"The official flag of the state authorities is the state flag that shows the state's coat of arms in the middle, shifted a little towards the pole, in the green and red stripes each over up to a fifth ."

The state coat of arms combines the coats of arms of the three parts of the country: the Rhine for the Rhineland , the Sachsenross for Westphalia and the Lippe rose for the former state of Lippe, which was added in 1947 .

Similar flags were used by the Cisrhenan Republic as early as 1797 and the Rhenish Republic in 1923 .
