The Lippe Rose

The Lippe rose is a common figure in heraldry . The symbol goes back to the shield of the Lippe house.

presentation

The Lippe Rose is a rose with five red petals, five golden (yellow) sepals and golden (yellow) clusters . The 16 golden points of the Butzen periphery are intended to represent the 16 communities in the Lippe district.

Most of the time, the rose is depicted with one sepal facing down and one petal facing up. The center of the flower is also known as the clump, button or roach. This rose is called a common figure in heraldry . The Lippe rose is a special case in the representation of the heraldic roses and provided with its own name. The representation in the escutcheon and its coloring ( tinging ) are therefore fixed and can be understood as reliable identification features.

origin

The Lippe Rose was the coat of arms of the noble lords of the Lippe and was therefore also included in the state coat of arms of the state of Lippe , which existed as a state in various legal forms until 1947. A branch line of the house of Lippe ruled in Schaumburg-Lippe , so that its coat of arms also showed the Lippe rose.

distribution

The spread of the Lippe rose as a coat of arms was roughly limited to the area of the former states of Lippe and Schaumburg-Lippe. This corresponds to parts of today 's Lippe district and the area around Lippstadt in North Rhine-Westphalia as well as some sub-areas in the Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony . In addition, the Lippe rose occasionally found its way into the coats of arms of associated noble families through dynastic connections.

use

In addition to its historical significance as the coat of arms of the two states of Lippe and Schaumburg-Lippe, the Lippe rose now appears in the coat of arms of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia , into which the state of Lippe was incorporated. In the coat of arms of North Rhine-Westphalia, however, the rose is shown rotated by 36 degrees, contrary to the usual representation, so that one of the sepals points up instead of down. In the coat of arms of North Rhine-Westphalia, one of the sepals points downwards. Due to the connection between Bernhard zur Lippe-Biesterfeld and Juliana von Oranien-Nassau , Queen of the Netherlands , the rose found its way into some coats of arms of the Dutch royal family. For example, Queen Beatrix had the Lippe Rose in her coat of arms until she ascended the throne.

In addition, the Lippe rose also found its way into the coats of arms of the counties and districts, cities and municipalities in the region early on. The Lippe Rose is represented, for example, in the coat of arms of the Lippe and Soest districts, in the coats of arms of the towns of Rehburg-Loccum , Barntrup and Oerlinghausen , in the coat of arms of the communities of Augustdorf and Schlangen and in the coat of arms of the former communities of Rischenau and Störmede .

Modified forms (for example without sepals, different colored clusters, different colors) can be found in the coats of arms of Detmold , Bückeburg , Blomberg , Horn-Bad Meinberg , Lemgo , Lippstadt and Lügde .

In addition, the Lippe Rose can be found in a number of associations and institutions in these areas. The Lippe rose, for example, is the coat of arms of the Lippe regional association . The rose was regularly used on the Lippe coins . After the reunification of Germany, the Lippe rose was used as the logo of the Schloss Proschwitz winery near Meißen , which is run by a member of the Lippe family. The Bundeswehr also repeatedly resorted to the Lippe Rose. For example, the (internal) association badges of many units of the Panzer Brigade 21 based in Augustdorf in Lippe and the now defunct Airborne Brigade 27 based in the former Lippstadt in Lippstadt show the Lippische Rose.
