European Football Championship 2016 / Czech Republic
This article covers the Czech national team at the 2016 European Football Championship in France . It was the sixth participation in the European Championship finals for the Czech Republic, making the Czech Republic one of the six teams that have always been there since the increase to 16 finals.
qualification
Czech Republic completed the qualification for the European Championship in Group A . The Czechs, who were drawn from the second-best pot in the group draw, began qualifying with a 2-1 win over third-placed Netherlands. The next three games were won before the first point was given in the home game against Latvia. Before the summer break they lost in Iceland. Narrow wins against Kazakhstan and Latvia followed, making the Czechs the third team (after hosts France and England) to qualify ahead of schedule. With a 2-0 home defeat against Turkey, in which some regular players were not used, the group win was jeopardized. A 3-2 win in Amsterdam against the Netherlands made the group win perfect and at the same time relegated the Dutch to fourth place, because at the same time the leading but also already qualified Icelanders lost in Turkey, who thus became the best group third and thus qualified directly. However, Marek Suchý received the red card because of an emergency brake and is therefore banned for at least the first group game of the final round.
The Czechs conceded a total of 14 goals and thus the most of all qualified teams.
In total, coach Pavel Vrba , who took over the team after missing qualification for the 2014 World Cup , used 31 players, but only Vladimír Darida was used in all ten games. Eleven players were able to enter the goalscorer list, of which Bořek Dočkal was the most accurate with four goals. At the game in Iceland, captain Tomáš Rosický made his 100th international match and Milan Škoda came to his first international appearance. In the next game against Kazakhstan, David Pavelka and Jiří Skalák made their first international appearances.
In the course of qualifying, the Czechs improved from 35th to 15th in the FIFA world rankings , but then fell back to 17th place.

Finals
Venues (yellow = draw, red = lost), quarters (blue) |
At the draw for the six final groups on December 12, 2015, the Czechs were placed in Pot 3. The Czechs were drawn into Group D with defending champions Spain, Croatia and qualifying opponents Turkey. Before that, there had been a draw and three defeats against Spain in four games, in the qualifications for the 1998 World Cup and the Euro 2012 . Turkey had previously opposed the Czechs nine times, with the Czechs having five wins and one draw - with three defeats. At the European Championship preliminary round in 2008 , both teams met in the last group game. The Czechs lost a 2-0 lead in the final minutes and lost 3-2, which meant they missed the quarter-finals. Both were already group opponents in the qualification, whereby the Turks won the last comparison and thus for the first time in the Czech Republic and thus paved the way to the final round. Before that, there were only friendlies against Croatia, one of which ended in a draw and one was lost.
The Czechs lost the opening game 0: 1, which does not express the superiority of the Spaniards. In the second game against Croatia they were initially the weaker team and were down 2-0 by the 75th minute. Then Milan Škoda , who had been substituted eight minutes earlier, scored the first goal and after the Croatian spectators had interrupted the game due to riots in the stands in the final minutes, they took advantage of the confusion of the Croatian players and pushed for an equalizer, which they did with a hand penalty in the Added time got the chance. Tomáš Necid , who was only substituted during the riots , was able to take advantage of this opportunity and bring the Czechs a happy balance. In the last group game against the Turks, who started with two defeats, they had to win in order to reach the knockout round, but lost 2-0. The Czechs were eliminated as the bottom of the group.
As a result of the European Championship games, the Czech Republic lost 47 points and three places in the FIFA world rankings .
