Ozan Tufan missed the only big Turkish chance in the entire game when he headed Subašić in the 29th minute. The otherwise dominant Croatians took the lead before the break thanks to a long-range shot from Modrić. In the second half, Croatia failed to score despite numerous very good opportunities.

Spain were the superior team throughout the game, but for a long time found no means against the very defensive Czechs. Only in the closing stages did Piqué head a cross from Iniesta for the winning goal. Spain was the fourth defending champion after the Soviet Union ( 1964 ), Germany ( 1976 ) and France ( 2004 ) to win their opening game.

The game was interrupted in the 86th minute for about five minutes after fireworks from the Croatian fan block were thrown onto the square and there had been riots within it. A steward and Ivan Perišić were slightly injured by an exploding firecracker.
