Marko Rog (born July 19, 1995 in Varaždin ) is a Croatian football player . The midfielder has been under contract with Cagliari Calcio in the Italian Serie A since the 2019/20 season .

Club career

Marko Rog began his career in the youth of his home club NK Varaždin . There he was promoted to the first team in 2013 and was able to score 17 goals in 30 games for the third-rate club straight away . This drew the attention of the first division club RNK Split , which signed the attacking midfielder for the 2014/15 season. Rog was also able to establish himself immediately in the 1st HNL , Croatia's highest division, scoring seven goals and preparing five more goals in 30 league games. In the UEFA Europa League 2014/15 he failed with his new club in the final qualifying round at the Italian representative FC Turin and thus narrowly missed the participation in the group stage. In the final of the national cup, Rog lost 4-2 on penalties to his future club Dinamo Zagreb . The Croatian record champions signed the talented midfielder for the 2015/16 season for around five million euros. This is the highest transfer fee to date that has ever been paid for a player within the Croatian first division. In August 2016, the move from Rog to SSC Napoli was announced. In January 2019, Sevilla FC on loan the attacking midfielder until the end of the season. In the 2019 summer transfer window, the Croatian midfielder will move to Cagliari Calcio on loan with a purchase obligation for a total of 15 million euros .

National team

On November 12, 2014, Marko Rog made his debut for the senior national team in a 2-1 defeat in a friendly against runners-up Argentina . Six minutes before the end of the game he was substituted on for Duje Čop .

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Croatian squad . His only appearance was in the last group game against defending champions Spain, when five regular players were replaced. Croatia won and were group winners, but were eliminated in the round of 16.
