Ragnar Klavan (born October 30, 1985 in Viljandi ) is an Estonian football player . His father Dzintar was also a professional footballer and national player.

Career

In the club

In Estonia and the Netherlands

In his youth, Klavan played for FC Elva and JK Tulevik Viljandi from his hometown. Here he made the leap into the first team and moved to FC Flora Tallinn in 2003 , for which he played for a year and was Estonian champion. In August 2004 he signed a contract with the Norwegian first division club Vålerenga IF from Oslo , for which he was also active for a year. In August 2005 he went to Heracles Almelo in the Netherlands , where he played 95 league games until 2009, scoring four goals. From January to June 2009, Heracles loaned it to AZ Alkmaar and sold it to AZ Alkmaar in the summer of the same year. With AZ Alkmaar, Klavan became Dutch champions in 2009.

FC Augsburg

For the 2012/13 season, Klavan moved to FC Augsburg . He made his Bundesliga debut on September 14, 2012 (3rd matchday) in a 0-0 home game against VfL Wolfsburg with a substitution in the 67th minute for Matthias Ostrzolek .

In the 2012/13 season he played 30 Bundesliga games and established himself in central defense. He also played two games in the DFB Cup , in which FCA was eliminated from Bayern Munich in the round of 16. On March 1, 2014, he was the first Estonian to score a goal in the Bundesliga against Hannover 96 on matchday 23 . Klavan played 30 games in the Bundesliga this season. In the 2014/15 season, he qualified for participation in the Europa League with FC Augsburg . He was used in all 34 games in the Bundesliga and scored two goals.

On September 17, 2015, Klavan played his first game in the European Cup wearing the FC Augsburg jersey, when he started the first game in the group stage of the Europa League against Athletic Bilbao . FC Augsburg met FC Liverpool in the sixteenth finals . After the first leg (0-0), Klavan was voted “Player of the Week” by UEFA in an internet vote. His contract with FC Augsburg ran until 2017.

Liverpool FC, Cagliari Calcio

For the 2016/17 season , Klavan moved to Liverpool FC in the English Premier League .

He has been under contract with the Italian first division club Cagliari Calcio since August 2018 .

National team

Klavan has been an Estonian national player since 2003. He made his debut for the Estonian national team on September 6, 2003 in the European Championship qualifier against Bulgaria .

Klavan played his 100th international match on March 27, 2015 in the European Championship qualification in a 3-0 draw against Switzerland . For some time he has been leading the national team onto the field as team captain .
