Luca Cigarini (born June 20, 1986 in Montecchio Emilia , RE ) is an Italian football player who has been under contract with Cagliari Calcio since summer 2017 .

Career

In the club

Cigarini learned to play football at AC Parma (from 2004 FC Parma ), where he went through all youth teams. In the 2004/05 season he was awarded to Sambenedettese in Serie C1 . There he completed 33 league games and scored four goals.

After the successful season in San Benedetto del Tronto , the midfielder returned to Parma and was accepted into the first team. Cigarini made his Serie A debut on September 17, 2005 against FC Empoli . In his debut season he came on a total of 17 appearances with the professionals. On April 15, 2007, he scored his first goal in Serie A in the home game against Catania Calcio .

In July 2008, Luca Cigarini moved to Atalanta Bergamo for around five million euros . He played 23 league games and scored three goals.

At the beginning of July 2009, the SSC Napoli bought it for eleven million euros. Cigarini signed a five-year contract. On the first day of the match he made his debut for Napoli against US Palermo . He scored his first goal against AC Milan at San Paolo on October 28, 2009  - his 100th Serie A game - after a pass from Michele Pazienza .

In the summer break of 2010, Cigarini was awarded to Sevilla FC . He made his debut for Sevilla FC on August 18, 2010 in the 1-0 defeat in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs at Sporting Braga in the starting line-up. On August 28, 2010 Cigarini made his league debut when he was in the starting line-up in the 4-1 win on Matchday 1 in Levante against UD Levante . Days earlier, Sevilla FC failed in the Champions League play-offs to Braga; the second leg was lost 3: 4. For this reason, Cigarini and Sevilla continued to play in the Europa League . On September 16, 2010, he made the first European Cup game of his career when he was in the starting line-up in the 1-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain . On September 30, 2010, Cigarini scored the first European Cup goal of his career when he scored the goal of the day in a 1-0 win over Borussia Dortmund . He made six league appearances throughout the 2010/11 season and four games in the Europa League. In the second he scored two goals.

A year later, in August 2011, he was loaned to Atalanta Bergamo . Following the two-year loan, he was signed on and stayed until 2016 before moving to Sampdoria Genoa . The move to Cagliari Calcio followed in summer 2017 .

In the national team

Cigarini played one game each in the Italian U-18 and U-19 teams. He made five competitive games for the U-20s . In early 2007, he was first called up by coach Pierluigi Casiraghi for the Italian U-21 national team. He scored his first goal in the U-21s on September 7, 2007 in Trento against the Faroe Islands .

Cigarini participated with Italy in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and in the 2009 U-21 European Championship in Sweden .
