Montecchio Emilia is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 10,517 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Reggio Emilia in Emilia-Romagna . The municipality is located about 14 kilometers west of Reggio nell'Emilia and about 13.5 kilometers southeast of Parma on the Enza , a tributary of the Pos . Since 2008 the municipality has had the title Città (city).

history

In ancient times the settlement was known as Monticulum . Here the Enza on the upper Apennines could be crossed. Later the village and the surrounding villages belonged to the Duchy of Modena and then to the Cispadan Republic .

Today's State Road 9 roughly corresponds to the course of the ancient Via Emilia . It runs a little north of the municipality parallel to the A1 autostrada from Milan towards Florence and Rome .
