history

The former settlement of Luceria , which was of Ligurian-Etruscan origin and probably existed until the early Middle Ages, is located in the municipality .

The history of the community is still closely linked to the medieval castle complex. This was built by the son of the Longobard Siegfried (the founder of the Canossa family), Adalbert Atto, in the first half of the 10th century. Margravine Mathilde von Canossa resided here . In 1077 King Heinrich IV moved as a penitent from Speyer to Canossa, where the Pope was staying at the time (the so-called walk to Canossa ).

Personalities

The Canossa dynasty begins with the Longobard Sigifredus at the beginning of the 10th century, who originally came from Lucca .
