Magdalena Gabriela from Canossa
Magdalena Gabriela Margravine of Canossa (it: Maddalena Gabriella dei marchesi di Canossa) (born March 1, 1774 in Verona , † April 10, 1835 ibid) was an Italian religious woman , religious founder and saint .
Life
She was the daughter of Margrave Ottavio von Canossa and Countess Teresa Szluha. Her father died in October 1779 in a tragic accident in the Lessinia during a hike, her mother married the Margrave Edoardo Zenetti from Mantua in 1781 and left the family.
After a short time in Carmelite monasteries , 1791 in Verona and 1792 in Congeliano Veneto, she herself looked after neglected children from 1800. In order to be able to better fulfill this task, she tried to find a house in which numerous children could be looked after and taught. She was able to acquire this in 1802 in the parish of San Zeno . In 1808 Napoléon , with whom the Canossa family maintained good relations, left the monastery of SS. Giuseppe e Fidenzio for its foundation. In 1810 she was called to Venice to also set up welfare schools for girls there. There she also worked on the draft of a rule, which she was able to complete in 1814. It was influenced on the one hand by Vincent de Paul , on the other hand by the rules of the Jesuits . The Congregation of the “ Canossian Sisters ”, also called “Daughters of Love”, emerged from their institute . As early as 1816 Pius VII. Praised Pope Leo XII in a breve . finally confirmed the order on December 23, 1828. She was in contact with Antonio Rosmini since 1820 and influenced his plans for the establishment of the Rosminians .
The beatification process was already under Pius IX. Initiated in 1877, Pius XI. noted her heroic virtues in 1927. Magdalena was born in 1941 by Pope Pius XII. Beatified and canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II .
Her feast day in the liturgy is May 8th .
