Pierluigi Casiraghi (born March 4, 1969 in Monza ( MI )) is a former Italian football player and current coach .

During his playing days he was a striker and played for Juventus Turin , Lazio and Chelsea FC .

Player career

In the club

Casiraghi began his career as a professional footballer in 1985 at the age of 16 with his hometown club and then second division club AC Monza . After four seasons with 28 goals for Monza, he moved to Juventus Turin in 1989 . In 1990 Casiraghi won with Juve the UEFA Cup and the Italian Cup , in 1993 again the UEFA Cup.

For the 1993/94 season Casiraghi moved to Lazio Rome , for which he scored 41 goals in five years. In 1998 he went to England to join Chelsea . In a clash with Shaka Hislop , the West Ham United goalkeeper , he suffered multiple fractures of his knee in November 1998. After a number of surgeries, Casiraghi had to end his playing career in 2000 at the age of only 31.

In the national team

Pierluigi Casiraghi made his debut in 1991 in the Italian national team , with whom he became vice world champion in 1994 . Also at the European Championships in 1996 he was in the squad of the Azzurri . He scored two goals in the game against Russia , but his team was eliminated in the preliminary round behind Germany and the Czech Republic . Casiraghi scored 13 goals in his 44 international matches.

Coaching career

After leaving as a player, Casiraghi first coached youth teams from his home club Monza before briefly taking over the fourth-class (Serie C2, Girone A) professional team of AC Legnano .

From July 2006 to October 2010 he coached the Italian U-21 national team with Gianfranco Zola . In 2008 he was the coach of the Italian Olympic team and led the Italian team to the title at the Toulon tournament .
