Raio Piiroja (born July 11, 1979 in Pärnu ) is an Estonian football player on the position of defender .

Career

Piiroja started his football career in 1995 with JK Pärnu Tervis (from 1997 the club was called SK Lelle) and played there until 1999. Between 1999 and 2004 he was under contract with FC Flora Tallinn and won the Estonian championship here in 2001 and 2002.

In 2003, the 1.90 m tall defender was loaned to Vålerenga IF in the Norwegian Tippeligaen for one year . The rental fee was 50,000 euros. Piiroja played eleven games and scored one goal during the season. For the 2004 season, Piiroja did not return to Tallinn, but stayed in Norway and signed a contract with Fredrikstad FK , also in the Tippeligaen. On August 22, 2004 Piiroja made his debut for Fredrikstad in the game against Odd Grenland . In 2006 he won the Norwegian Cup with Fredrikstad. In the cup final against Sandefjord Fotball , he contributed two goals to the 3-0 win.

For the 2011/12 season Piiroja moved to Vitesse Arnheim in the Dutch Eredivisie . He struggled with knee problems during the season and only made two short appearances (substitution in the 90th minute against SC Heerenveen and substitution in the 88th minute against De Graafschap ). His contract was not renewed after the Arnhem season.

In 2012 Piiroja returned to Flora Tallinn. In February 2013 he signed with the Chinese second division club Chengdu Blades .

For the Estonian national soccer team , Raio Piiroja played a total of 114 games until his farewell game against Iceland on March 31, 2015. He was named Estonian Footballer of the Year in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 .

Private

In the early summer of 2012, Piiroja was charged with tax evasion in Norway. He was accused of not properly taxing his earnings.
