Jonas Eriksson (* 28. March 1974 in Luleå ) is a former Swedish FIFA - football referee .

Career

Eriksson started as a referee at Svenska Fotbollförbundet in 1994 . Four years later he came to his first appearance in the second division , in 2000 he made his debut in the Allsvenskan . In the same year he whistled for the first time at international level, in 2002 he became a FIFA referee. In the following years he was used in various European Cup games and played in qualifying for European and World Championships .

Eriksson ran a sports rights agency with two business partners, in which he held over ten percent. When the agency was taken over by the French group of companies Groupe Lagardère in the summer of 2007 for 750 million Swedish kronor (approx. 85 million euros ) , Eriksson received a corresponding share. As a result, there was a media response that alluded in particular to the fact that normally only the players are millionaires in football. After not being nominated for the 2018 World Cup , Eriksson announced his retirement as an active referee in May 2018.

Special missions

On December 20, 2011, UEFA announced that Eriksson would be one of twelve referees at the 2012 European Football Championship . He directed a total of two games.

On August 30, 2013, Eriksson led the match between Bayern Munich and Chelsea in Prague in the UEFA Super Cup , which the German representative won on penalties . As a result, he was faced with criticism from José Mourinho , the coach of the defeated English team.

After Eriksson had led matches in the context of UEFA qualifying for the 2014 World Cup finals , the world governing body entrusted him with the management of the intercontinental play-off between Uruguay and Jordan , which ended in a 0-0 draw. He was nominated as one of nine UEFA representatives to referee the final tournament in Brazil in the summer of 2014 and chaired two group stage matches and a round of 16.

On December 15, 2015, Eriksson was nominated as referee for the 2016 European Football Championship . Along with the German Felix Brych, he is one of the 7 referees who were also allowed to lead games at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil .
