Günter Benkö
Günter Benkö (born July 12, 1955 in Oberwart , Burgenland ) is a former Austrian football referee .
career
Günter Benkö began his referee career in 1980. From 1991 to 2001 he directed games in the Austrian Bundesliga . In 1993 he made his first appearance as a FIFA referee with the U-21 game Albania against Denmark . He made his first appearance in the UEFA Champions League in 1995 with the game Rosenborg BK against Blackburn Rovers . At the 1998 World Cup in France , he directed two games. In the same year he directed games at the Gulf Cup of Nations in Bahrain . At the European Championships in 2000 he was elected referee of the tournament.
After the end of his active career, he was elected chairman of the Burgenland referees committee and appointed to the referees committee of the Austrian Football Association (ÖFB) . Benkö also works as a referee observer for the ÖFB, UEFA and FIFA.
During the European Football Championship in 2008 , Benkö looked after the referees in Klagenfurt on behalf of UEFA .
