Lucien Van Nuffel

Lucien Van Nuffel (born January 14, 1914November 10, 1980 ) was a Belgian football referee .

Athletic career

Van Nuffel was active as a player for Royal Antwerp before he also appeared internationally as a referee from the late 1940s. After he had already been active as a referee in qualifying for the 1954 World Cup finals , he was one of the referees at the 1958 World Cup tournament. He led the goalless draw between the host Swedish national team and the national team from Wales in the group stage. Other tournaments followed at the 1960 Olympic Games and in the quarter-finals at the 1960 European Championships . At club level, he led the final of the 1963/64 European Cup Winners' Cup between Sporting Lisbon and MTK Budapest , which ended in a 3-3 draw. The replay was headed by his compatriot Gérard Versyp . In addition, he whistled, among other things, semi-finals in the European Champions Cup , including the first leg between BSC Young Boys and Stade Reims in the 1958/59 European Cup, the first leg between FC Barcelona and Hamburger SV in the 1960/61 European Cup, and in the European Cup the national champions 1962/63 the second leg between FC Dundee and AC Milan .

For the 75th anniversary of Royal Antwerp, he published a book in 1955 under the title "Royal Antwerp Football Club Guldenboek".
