Serge Muhmenthaler (born May 20, 1953 in Grenchen ) is a former Swiss football player and football referee .
Football career
Muhmenthaler grew up in Grenchen and began his football career at FC Grenchen. There he played first with the juniors, later in the 1st team in the NLB and after promotion in 1971 in the NLA . He scored the first goal in the watch cup final in 1971 when Grenchen defeated FC Basel 3-1. He was a member of the junior national team and a member of the national team.
In 1972 he moved to BSC Young Boys and played there as a striker for three years. With the Young Boys, Muhmenthaler won the Uhrencup in 1973 and scored a goal in the semifinals against his former club Grenchen.
In 1975 Muhmenthaler moved to FC Basel with a two-year contract . He made his Basel debut in the season opener against Grasshoppers Club and celebrated an opening win with 5: 1. Muhmenthaler was responsible for three of these hits. He played in Basel for three years and became Swiss champion in 1977 . However, he suffered a ruptured meniscus in a league cup match in February 1976 and despite three operations within two years, he received a new contract with FCB. Muhmenthaler reached his third watch cup final with his third club in 1977, but did not get to repeat the success. The final was lost 6-1 to Neuchâtel Xamax . The following year, Basel won the final 2-1 against Xamax. Due to injury, Serge Muhmenthaler had to end his playing career early.
Referee career
After his time as an active player, Muhmenthaler became a referee. His career in brief: 1980/81: 3rd division . 1981 to 1984: 2nd division . From season 1984/85: Referee in the Swiss Football League . From 1989: FIFA referee.
From 1980 until the end of his career in December 1997, he led around 250 SFV games and around 75 international matches, including his personal highlight as the World Cup qualifier on November 11, 1997 between Italy and Russia (1-0) in front of 80,000 spectators in Stadio San Paolo , Naples . As part of the German-Swiss exchange of referees practiced at the time, Muhmenthaler also led four games in the Bundesliga between 1988 and 1990 .
