Martin Atkinson
Martin Atkinson (born March 31, 1971 in Dewsbury , West Yorkshire ) is an English football referee . Since 2006 he has been directing international matches for FIFA .
Career
Atkinson began his referee career in 1986 at the age of 15. He made his first division debut in the Premier League on September 18, 2004 on the 6th matchday in the game Crystal Palace against Manchester City . In 2005 Atkinson was included in the English professional referee list “Select Group Referees” and in 2006 appointed FIFA referee. His first international game was the U-19 friendly between Croatia and Greece (2-2) on June 1, 2007. He was director of the 2011 FA Cup final between Manchester City and Stoke City (1-0). At the 2012 European Football Championship , Atkinson was part of the English referee team as goal judge. On February 9, 2013 he led his 200th Premier League game in a 3-1 between Southampton FC and Manchester City. He is divided into the highest UEFA referee category “Elite Group”.
After the game between Chelsea FC and Manchester United on March 1, 2011 in the Premier League, there was an argument with Manchester coach Alex Ferguson . This criticized a not given red card for the Chelsea player David Luiz and a controversial penalty decision for the London club, which led to the 2-1 final result. Then Atkinson should not be used for eleven months in meetings of Manchester United until he should take over their game in the fourth FA Cup round against Liverpool on January 28, 2012. Ferguson, who had already disapproved of Atkinson's leadership of the 2011 FA Cup final, said he wanted a "fair referee" but didn't get it. Ultimately, Mark Halsey was the referee of the game that Manchester United lost 2-1.
Atkinson lives in Wakefield and works full time as a police officer . In his spare time he does fitness training and plays golf.
