Viktor Kassai [ ˈviktor ˈkɒʃːɒ.i ] (born September 10, 1975 in Tatabánya ) is a Hungarian football referee . Kassai works full-time as a travel agent in Thessaloniki and Budapest . In addition to Hungarian, he also speaks English and German.

Career

Kassai has been an international FIFA referee since 2003 . He conducted his first international match on August 18, 2004 at the age of 29 in Bratislava , when Slovakia received Luxembourg (qualification for the 2006 World Cup ).

In 2007 Kassai directed two U-20 World Cup games in Canada . At the 2008 European Football Championship in Switzerland and Austria , he was used as the fourth official . At the soccer tournament for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , he directed several games, including the final. The FIFA nominated Viktor Kassai as one of 30 referees for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa . There he came to four missions. In 2011 he directed the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League final at London's Wembley Stadium between FC Barcelona and Manchester United . He was one of the twelve referees who oversaw the games at the 2012 European Football Championship . In the preliminary round match of the European Championships 2012 England versus Ukraine , Kassai refused to acknowledge a Ukrainian goal when John Terry was only able to clear the ball behind the line. However, this scene was preceded by an offside position by Ukraine, which the referee team also failed to recognize.

In January 2012 he was named World Referee of the Year 2011 by the IFFHS .

Although he was on the prospective list of 52 referees for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was not nominated for the final tournament.

However, UEFA nominated him for the 2016 European Football Championship . There he led a total of 3 games, including the opening game between hosts France and Romania and a quarter-finals.

Viktor Kassai became the first football referee to use video evidence in an official FIFA match in 2016 .
