Pedro Proença Oliveira Alves Garcia (born November 3, 1970 in Lisbon ) is a former Portuguese football referee who was used both for the national association and internationally. Since July 30, 2015 he has been President of the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional , the organization of Portuguese professional football.

career

Proença was a member of the Lisbon Football Association ( Associação de Futebol de Lisboa ) and is employed as Finance Director. Since the 1988/89 season he was active as a referee, since 1998 in the Portuguese first division . He has been a FIFA referee since 2003 ; his first match was the UI Cup encounter between VMFD Žalgiris Vilnius and Örgryte IS on June 22, 2003 . At the U-19 European Championship in 2004 , he headed two group games, including the 3-1 victory of the German selection against Poland and the final. In the 2004/05 season he was active in the UEFA Cup and World Cup qualifying .

In the 2008/09 UEFA Cup he headed two games by German teams: In the first round, FC Schalke 04's draw against APOEL Nicosia and, in the round of 16, Hamburger SV's 3-2 victory at Galatasaray Istanbul . At the U-21 European Championship in 2009 , he was the referee of the semi-finals of later European champions Germany in a 1-0 win against Italy .

In the Champions League 2010/11 Proença was in action four times before the semi-finals; Among other things, he led the 2: 3 defeat that eliminated FC Bayern Munich against Inter Milan . On May 4, 2011, he completed his fifth CL season match (semifinal match between Manchester United and FC Schalke 04 ).

Proença was one of the twelve referees who oversaw the games at the 2012 European Football Championship . He also directed the 2011/12 UEFA Champions League final in Munich.

On July 1, 2012, he was the first Portuguese to lead a European Championship final . The game between Spain and Italy (4-0) took place in Kiev. In 2013, he was one of ten referees to appear at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup . He also directed three games at the 2014 World Cup .

In January 2015, he resigned as a referee. In July of the same year he successfully ran for the office of president of the Liga Portuguesa de Futebol Profissional , which Luís Duque had held from 2014 to 2015.
