Mark Geiger (2018)

Mark Geiger (born August 25, 1974 in Beachwood , New Jersey ) is an American football referee for the Professional Referee Organization. He directs games in the North American Major League Soccer . In addition to refereeing, Geiger also works as a math teacher.

Career

Geiger has been a referee since 1988. In 2003 he became a national referee for the United States Soccer Federation and has been in the MLS since 2004. Since his appointment as FIFA referee in 2008, he has been used in CONCACAF tournaments such as the Gold Cup and other international competitions. In 2011 he was selected for the CONCACAF U-20 championship and directed the final there. In the same year, FIFA selected him for the U-20 World Cup , where he was scheduled in two preliminary round matches, a round of 16 and the final. He was also voted MLS Referee of the Year in 2011. With the Olympic Games in 2012 and the Club World Cup in 2013 , two more international tournaments followed in which Geiger directed games. On January 14, 2014 Geiger was appointed by the FIFA Referees Committee for the 2014 World Cup . He represented CONCACAF together with Joel Aguilar from El Salvador and Marco Antonio Rodríguez Moreno from Mexico . Geiger headed two games in the group stage and a round of 16.

He was nominated by FIFA as one of 9 referees for the FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 in Russia .

Geiger was used as a referee and video referee at the 2018 World Cup .

Further employment

Geiger teaches math at Lacey Township High School in Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey. He was among 103 recipients of an award for outstanding teaching in mathematics and science in 2009.
