List of referee assignments at the 2018 World Cup
The list of referee assignments at the 2018 World Cup includes all referees who were appointed to the 2018 World Cup from June 14 to July 15, 2018 in Russia .
General
On March 29, 2018, FIFA nominated 36 referees and 63 assistant referees . On April 30th, FIFA nominated 13 referees who will be used exclusively as video assistants . In addition, some referees and assistant referees who are deployed in the stadium are also used as video assistants.
The referee Fahad Al-Mirdasi (Saudi Arabia) was suspended for life at the end of May 2018 for demanding a bribe from the Ittihad president before the final of the Saudi Arabian King Cup between Ittihad FC and Al-Faisaly FC . His assistant referees Mohammed Al-Abakry and Abdulah Al-Shalwai were also withdrawn from the tournament. No new referee was nominated. The FIFA Referees Committee instead nominated two assistant referees to complete the referee team of Mohammed Abdullah Hassan Mohammed (United Arab Emirates) and Ryūji Satō (Japan): Hasan Almahri (United Arab Emirates) and Hiroshi Yamauchi (Japan).
On June 7, 2018, it became known that the Kenyan assistant referee Marwa Range was also involved in allegations of bribery. This is said to have accepted a gift of around $ 600. He was then removed from the list of linesmen without an official statement from FIFA. The participation of his other team, consisting of the Gambian referee Bakary Gassama and the Burundian assistant Jean-Claude Birumushahu , was discussed afterwards. No assistant referee was nominated to replace Marwa Range.
The 2018 World Cup was run by a team of 35 referees and 62 assistant referees. A total of 30 referee teams were used to lead the 64 games. Of these, there were 21 referee teams from one country, all other teams were formed from different nations; three of these teams were made up of three different nations. It is noteworthy that the assistant referee Juan Zumba (El Salvador) was used on two different referee teams. In addition, there are 5 support referee teams who were used exclusively as fourth official or fifth official . The Ethiopian referee or fourth official Bamlak Weyesa was called up to the games with various assistant referees.
The average age of all main referees was 40.29 years, with the Serb Milorad Mažić being the oldest referee at 45 and the Mexican César Ramos being the youngest referee at 34.
The Argentine Néstor Pitana directed both the opening game and the final, he also had the most game directors with five appearances.
