Fifth official

The fifth official in football is an assistant referee who is nominated for a game as a reserve for the other two assistant referees. He is used if one of these assistant referees should be canceled immediately before or during the game.

The fifth official was introduced by the FIFA World Cup for the 2006 World Cup . So far, however, the duties of the fifth official are not yet part of the official football rules . At the 2006 World Cup, it was common practice to appoint one of the two assistant referees from the permanent team of the nominated fourth official as the fifth official .
