The Virginia wood warbler ( Vermivora virginiae ) is a songbird species from the wood warbler family (Parulidae). In 1858 the little bird was discovered by a doctor in the army in New Mexico . He named the bird after his wife Virginia Anderson. When Spencer Fullerton Baird described the species at the Smithsonian Institute in 1860 , he kept the name.

Male Virginia warblers have white underside plumage with a yellow patch on the chest and a red crown on the gray head. The upper side plumage is also mostly gray. The red crown and the yellow spot on the chest are missing in the females and young birds.

Virginia warblers inhabit the southwestern United States during the breeding season .
