The list of referee assignments at the 2010 Soccer World Cup includes all referees who were appointed to the 2010 Soccer World Cup from June 11 to July 11, 2010 in South Africa .

General

The English professional referee Howard Webb directed the final of the soccer World Cup.

After a first list of referee candidates was compiled by FIFA in 2008, a first list of cadres was announced on October 22, 2009. The referees and their assistants underwent extensive training and performance tests. In the end there was a choice of 30 referee teams. As two assistant referees failed the last fitness test, referees Mohamed Benouza ( Algeria ) and Carlos Amarilla ( Paraguay ) were removed from the list. The beneficiary of this measure was the Uruguayan Martín Vázquez , who was subsequently nominated. Ultimately, 29 referee teams were called up. Of these, however, only 24 teams were used to lead the 64 games, while 5 referees were considered "substitutes" and were only used as fourth officials . It was noteworthy that only 15 teams came from one country, while nine teams from different nations were put together; five of these teams were made up of three different nations.

The average age of all referees was 40.0 years, with the Brazilian Carlos Simon at 45 years the oldest referee and the Uzbek Ravshan Ermatov at just 33 years the youngest referee. The oldest assistant referee was the Swiss Francesco Buragina at 44.5 years of age, while Juan Zumba from El Salvador was the youngest at just 28 years old.

Surprisingly, the only 32-year-old Uzbek Ravshan Ermatov was not only entrusted with the management of the opening game between South Africa and Mexico, he also had the most game management with five appearances. He benefited from the fact that some well-known referees such as Jorge Larrionda (clear goal for England against Germany not given), Roberto Rosetti (his assistant Stefano Ayroldi did not indicate a clear offside goal for Argentina against Mexico) or Massimo Busacca (several questionable decisions in the game South Africa against Uruguay) had to leave the tournament prematurely due to poor performance after the round of 16. Roberto Rosetti, who was still in charge of the final of the European Football Championship in 2008 between Germany and Spain (0: 1), was so disappointed that, although he would have been allowed to direct international matches for two more years, after his departure announced the end of his referee career. Rosetti himself emphasized, however, that the elimination at the World Cup was not decisive and that he will be responsible for the referees in the Italian second division in the future.

Endgame

The English professional referee Howard Webb was entrusted with the management of the final between the Netherlands and Spain . Webb, who was sent home early at the European Football Championship in 2008 because of a recognized offside goal in the match between Austria and Poland (see also Referees at Work ), not only performed well up to the final, but also benefited from the fact that England knocked out in the last sixteen against Germany. This advancement of the German team prevented the German referee Wolfgang Stark from further assignments, as in the further course of the tournament only match officials were nominated whose teams had already been eliminated.
