Referees at Work - Referees in focus is the German-language title of a sports documentary that illuminates the work of football referees and was produced for UEFA by the Belgian production company Entre Chien et Loup .

action

The film Referees at Work - Referees in Focus is about the procedure of the referees at the European Football Championship 2008 in Austria and Switzerland. The focus is on the English referee Howard Webb . The documentation generally shows the influence of referees in football matches and shows the consequences of a wrong decision by the referee, especially in major events. After the soccer game between Austria and Poland (1: 1), the Polish media rushed because of alleged wrong decisions, which is why Webb's family had to be placed under police protection due to death threats.

In addition to the work of the referees on the football field, the meetings of the referee teams away from the field and their families are portrayed.

Documentation style

For the first time, UEFA has allowed a film team to record radio communications between the referees during the European Championship matches and to film the referees as they prepare for the matches.

The radio communications of the referees are reproduced in the original documentary and provided with subtitles. Thus, the viewer gets a direct insight into what is happening on the field and also hears the emotional arguments between referee and player in tricky situations.

The documentation only uses original quotes from the protagonists and completely dispenses with voiceover .

premiere

The world premiere took place on August 10, 2009 at the Locarno Film Festival . Six of the referees portrayed also came to Locarno for this purpose.

The film has been available on DVD since May 21, 2010.
