Massimo Busacca (born February 6, 1969 in Bellinzona ) is a former Swiss football referee .

Career

Busacca lives in Monte Carasso near Bellinzona. The business owner, whose home club is the US Monte Carasso, was a referee for the top Swiss division, the Axpo Super League (until 2003, National League A) from 1996 to 2011 . He has been a FIFA referee since 1998 . Busacca led three games at the 2006 World Cup in Germany with assistants Matthias Arnet and Francesco Buragina. At the European Football Championship 2008 in Austria / Switzerland, he led two preliminary round matches and the semi-finals between Germany and Turkey. The assistants Matthias Arnet and Stéphane Cuhat supported him here. In 2009 he directed the final of the Champions League .

On September 20, 2009, while he was in charge of the cup game between FC Baden and Young Boys Bern , he reacted to screams from Bern fans with the finger and was banned for three rounds. Even so, he was named World Referee 2009 by the IFFHS. From 2005 to 2010, Busacca received the award for Swiss “Referee of the Year” six times in a row. At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, he was only used in a preliminary round match for the host team.

On July 13, 2011, he announced his resignation as a FIFA referee and then took over the management of the FIFA referee department.
