Stefano Farina

Stefano Farina (born September 19, 1962 in Ovada ; † May 23, 2017 in Genoa ) was an Italian football referee who was active as a referee after his career.

Athletic career

From December 1979, Farina headed adult football matches as a referee. In January 1995 he made his debut in Serie A , in which he led 236 top division games by the end of his career in 2007. In addition, he was responsible for 117 league games in the second-rate Serie B as well as numerous games in the European Cup , both in the UEFA Champions League and in the UEFA Europa League or the forerunner UEFA Cup. His highlights include two games for the Supercoppa Italiana as well as the game for the UEFA Super Cup 2006 , in which Sevilla FC defeated FC Barcelona in a Spanish duel at the Stade Louis II in Monaco .

As a FIFA referee, Farina headed various international matches , including qualifying matches for the 2002 and 2006 World Cups and the 2004 and 2008 European Championship tournaments .

Even after the end of his playing career, Farina remained involved in refereeing. He was a referee observer for UEFA and was a member of the Italian Commissione Arbitri Nazionale . There he last sat before the three-person committee responsible for Serie B around Cristiano Copelli and Gabriele Gava .
