Hellmut Krug

Hellmut Krug (born May 19, 1956 in Gelsenkirchen ) was head of the soccer referee department at the German Football Association (DFB) until June 2, 2007 . Since October 1, 2007, he has been an advisor to the DFL on refereeing issues.

Hellmut Krug studied sport and Greek for teaching at the Ruhr University in Bochum . After the state examination, he took up a position as a high school teacher in Paderborn.

His hometown club is SG Eintracht Gelsenkirchen . He began his referee career at the DFB in 1984 at the age of 28. From the 1985/86 season he headed second division games and between 1986 and 2003 a total of 240 Bundesliga games . In 1996, Krug headed the DFB Cup final , four times (1994, 1999, 2002 and 2003) he was elected referee of the year .

Krug was appointed FIFA referee by the World Football Association in 1991. Until 2001 he was used in 29 international matches. It was used at the 1994 World Cup and the 1996 European Football Championship . Internationally, he also directed 40 European Cup matches; The highlights were the 1994 Supercup final, the 1998 Champions League final and the 1999 World Cup final .

From 2003 he worked in referee training at the DFB. In the soccer betting scandal in 2005 , he criticized the monitoring system for the DFB referees as "immature".

He was released from the position of head of the DFB referee in 2007 when he wanted to replace the chairman of the DFB referee committee, Volker Roth , with the former FIFA referee Lutz Michael Fröhlich . Although he was offered another job by the DFB, he decided to leave the association on July 31, 2007. Krug later became DFB referee manager and is a member of the Elite Referee Commission and the DFB Referee Committee. As a result of disputes between several referees, including Manuel Gräfe , with Hellmut Krug and Herbert Fandel , Krug resigned from the Elite Referees Committee on November 3, 2017 on the basis of a mediation proposal by the DFB Ethics Committee. On November 6, 2017, after allegations of manipulation in favor of FC Schalke 04 in the game against VfL Wolfsburg on matchday 10 of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season, he was released from his duties as project manager of the video evidence. However, the DFB stated that Krug's demotion was not related to the allegations. Instead, he will continue to be part of the project.
