Winfried Walz (born February 27, 1942 in Waiblingen ; † November 14, 2004 ) was a German football referee .

Life

Walz grew up with his twin brother Robert in Winnenden . He directed his first game in the former 2nd Bundesliga South in August 1974 when FC Augsburg beat SV Waldhof Mannheim . About a year later, he whistled his first game in the Bundesliga with the match between 1. FC Köln and 1. FC Kaiserslautern , which ended in a draw. In March 1984 he whistled a 9-0 for Bayern Munich against Kickers Offenbach , which is still considered Offenbach's biggest defeat in the Bundesliga. RW Essen's biggest Bundesliga defeat also happened under his leadership. Essen lost 7-1 at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. Due to a tissue weakness in his Achilles heel, which his brother, who was also active in the Bundesliga, suffered from, he had to end his career in professional football as a FIFA referee in 1985. In addition to the twins, the Waiblingen referee group provided another Bundesliga referee, Heinz Aldinger, at that time . In the sources there are different statements about how many games he whistled in total; 65 and 70 are mentioned. Winfried Walz died on November 14, 2004 as a result of an illness.
