Björn Kuipers (born March 28, 1973 in Oldenzaal ) is a Dutch football referee .

Career

On March 5, 2005 Kuipers made his debut as a referee in the Eredivisie at the game Vitesse Arnheim against Willem II Tilburg . He has been on the list of FIFA referees since 2006 and has since been allowed to direct international matches. He has been one of UEFA's elite referees since January 2009 and as such is suitable for leading particularly sensitive games.

At the U-21 European Football Championship in 2009 , he led the final, which Germany won 4-0 against England. He also directed the final of the 2011 UEFA Super Cup between FC Barcelona and FC Porto at the Stade Louis II in Monaco . At the European Football Championship in 2012 he was used. He was used in two games. On May 15, 2013 Kuipers chaired the final of the UEFA Europa League in Amsterdam between Benfica Lisbon and Chelsea FC . In 2013 he was one of ten referees at the Confederations Cup in Brazil. On May 24, 2014, he also directed the 2014 UEFA Champions League Final in Lisbon between Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid . At the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, he whistled three games, two in the group stage and one round of 16.

On December 15, 2015, Kuipers was nominated as referee for the 2016 European Football Championship . This makes him one of the seven referees, alongside the German Felix Brych , who were also used at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil . On May 7, 2018, Kuipers was scheduled by UEFA in the final of the 2017/18 UEFA Europa League between Olympique Marseille and Atlético Madrid in Lyon . His assistants were Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra, the fourth official was Szymon Marciniak from Poland . Danny Makkelie and Pol van Boekel were used as back- goal referees , Mario Diks was the substitute assistant .

At the 2018 World Cup he will be on duty with his assistants Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra .

Kuipers is a businessman. He studied at the Nijmegen Radboud University Business Administration . His father was also a football referee.
