Gottfried Dienst

Gottfried "Godi" Dienst (born September 9, 1919 in Basel ; † June 1, 1998 in Bern ) was a Swiss football referee .

In the 1950s and 1960s he was considered one of the best of his guild in Europe. In addition to numerous international encounters, the post official also whistled for the final in the 1960/61 European Cup in Bern's Wankdorf Stadium between Benfica Lisbon and FC Barcelona (3-2). In 1965 he was entrusted with the management of the fair cup final between Juventus Turin and Ferencváros Budapest (0-1). So it was hardly surprising that he was entrusted with the game management of the final of the World Cup between England and Germany on July 30, 1966 in London's Wembley Stadium , which ended 4-2 for the English team, which also included the so-called Wembley Gate fell. He was assisted by Karol Galba from Czechoslovakia and Tofiq Bəhramov from the Soviet Union .

Two years later, Dienst directed the first European Championship final between Italy and Yugoslavia on June 8, 1968 in Rome . Some observers wanted to have seen a clear partisanship in favor of the hosts in the direction of the game, so that the visiting team from Yugoslavia only achieved a 1-1 draw. However, these claims have never been substantiated. The replay two days later, which the Italians won 2-0, was directed by the Spaniard José María Ortiz de Mendíbil .
