Nicola Rizzoli (born October 5, 1971 in Mirandola ) is a former Italian football referee who has directed matches in the Italian Serie A since 2002 and has been on the FIFA list since 2007 .

Career

Rizzoli headed his first Champions League qualifying game in August 2007 and whistled his first Champions League group stage game in Sporting Lisbon's 2-0 win over FC Basel on October 1, 2008. In September 2007, Rizzoli served for the first time in an international match. In Cologne , the German national team defeated the team from Romania 3-1 in a test match.

Rizzoli was promoted to the elite group of UEFA referees in June 2009 , meaning he is qualified to lead UEFA's top matches. On April 7, 2010, Rizzoli led the Champions League quarter-final second leg between Manchester United and FC Bayern Munich . On May 12, 2010, he directed the final of the UEFA Europa League between Atlético Madrid and FC Fulham in Hamburg . In 2011 and 2012, Rizzoli was Italy's Referee of the Year .

On December 20, 2011, UEFA announced that Rizzoli had been nominated as one of twelve referees to oversee matches at the 2012 European Football Championship . On May 25, 2013, Rizzoli directed the final of the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich at Wembley Stadium in London . In the same year Rizzoli was used in two games of the U20 World Cup .

At the 2014 World Cup , Rizzoli headed a total of four games. In the group game between Spain and the Netherlands, he awarded Spain a controversial penalty. On July 13, 2014, he directed the final between Germany and Argentina. He came under criticism after the game due to controversial decisions on both sides, as well as the fact that he whistled against Germany after Italy left. In neutral England, however, his performance was praised, albeit with the caveat that Sergio Agüero had not been sent off. He was elected World Referee for the years 2014 and 2015 by the IFFHS .

On December 15, 2015, Rizzoli was nominated as referee for the 2016 European Football Championship . Besides the German Felix Brych, he is one of only 7 referees who were also allowed to lead games at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil .

Rizzoli retired in July 2017.
