Alireza Faghani ( Persian علی‌رضا فغانی, DMG ʿAlī-Reżā Faġānī ; * 21st March 1978 in Kashmar , Khorasan ) is an Iranian football referee . Among other things, he led the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and was named the best referee of the World Cup.

career

He has been international referee since 2008. Faghani was nominated as a support referee for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and was appointed fourth official in seven games . He was also a referee at the 2015 Asian Cup in Australia , where, among other things, he led the final between the hosts and South Korea.

On December 20, 2015, he directed the final of the Club World Cup between CA River Plate and FC Barcelona .

At the 2016 Olympic Games , he led the final between hosts Brazil and Germany.

On April 27, 2017, he was nominated by FIFA as one of nine referees for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia .
