Pierluigi Pairetto

Pierluigi Pairetto (born July 15, 1952 in Turin ) is a former Italian football referee .

Pairetto whistled his first Serie A game in 1981. At the European Football Championship in Sweden in 1992, he was in charge of the group match between the Netherlands and Germany , which Holland won 3-1. As part of the 1994 World Cup in the USA, the Italian whistled the round of 16 between Romania and Argentina (3-2). At the European Championships in England in 1996 , Pairetto led the match between Scotland and England (0-2) and the final between Germany and the Czechs at London's Wembley Stadium , which Germany won 2-1 after a golden goal from Oliver Bierhoff .

The Italian also led the final in the 1995/96 European Cup Winners' Cup , in which Paris Saint-Germain and SK Rapid Wien faced each other. The game ended 1-0 for the French.

As chief referee in Italy , Pairetto was involved in the football scandal in Italy in 2005/06 and was subsequently suspended for two and a half years.

Pairetto's son Luca is also a referee and has been leading games in Italy's top division since 2016.
