The 2014 UEFA Champions League Final was the final match of the 2013/14 Champions League season between the football clubs Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid on May 24, 2014 in Lisbon's Estádio da Luz , home of Benfica Lisbon , was carried out. The fact that two Spanish teams met has only happened once at the final in 2000 ; For the first time in the 58-year history of Europe's highest football competition, two teams from the same city faced each other in the final. The final was thus also the most important derbi madrileño between the two clubs. Real defeated Atlético 4-1 after extra time and qualified for the game against 2014 Europa League winners FC Sevilla for the 2014 UEFA Super Cup and for the semi-finals of the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup .

Stadium choice

The final took place in Lisbon's Estádio da Luz .

At the UEFA Executive Committee Meeting in Istanbul on March 20, 2012, the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon was chosen as the venue for the 2014 Champions League final. It is the home stadium of Benfica Lisbon and was built in 2003 for the 2004 European Football Championship . The final of the 1992 European Cup Winners' Cup and the final second leg of the 1983 UEFA Cup were held in the previous arena .

background

There have been four times in the history of the UEFA Champions League that two teams from the same country have played a final: in 2000 , Spanish, 2003 Italian, 2008 English and 2013 German teams fought for the title.

A derby , it has been eight times in total football - European Cup come; five times in the UEFA Champions League or the European Cup, twice in the UEFA Europa League ( 2013/14 between Betis and Sevilla FC ) or the UEFA Cup ( 2005/06 between Steaua and Rapid Bucharest ) and once in the exhibition cities Cup ( 1965/66 between FC Barcelona and Espanyol ). The very first city derby was also a Derbi madrileño ( 1958/59 ) and as in the 2014 final, the club from the north of Madrid had the upper hand over its rivals from the south. The Derby della Madonnina also took place twice ( 2002/03 and 2004/05 ), with AC Milan winning over their city rivals Inter both times . In addition, Chelsea FC, based in west London , was able to hold its own against Arsenal FC from the north of the city in the 2003/04 season .

The Dutchman Björn Kuipers was appointed as referee and Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra as his assistants . Fourth official was Cüneyt Çakır from Turkey, Herbert Fandel acted as referee observer .

The UEFA ambassador for the final was Luís Figo , who won the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2002 . The “Champions Festival” took place from May 22nd to 25th on the Praça do Comércio , the prices for final tickets were between 70 and 390  euros .

The 2013/14 UEFA Women's Champions League final was also played in Lisbon, on May 22nd at the Estádio do Restelo . The defending champion VfL Wolfsburg beat Tyresö FF 4: 3.

Teams

Qualified were the winners of the semi-finals Atlético Madrid , who defeated FC Chelsea 3-1 away on April 30th after going 0-0 in the first leg on April 22nd , and Real Madrid , who won Bayern Munich 1 : 0 and beat away 4-0 on April 29th. Atlético became Spanish champions and Real Cup winners in May 2014 , so the two teams met again in August in the Supercopa de España (winner: Atlético).

Real was aiming for la décima , the tenth title in the UEFA Champions League or the European Cup , for Atlético it would have been the first title in the European premier league of football. If the Rojiblancos had won the final, Madrid would have been the second city after Milan to have two winners of this competition ( AC and Inter ).

In a UEFA competition, Real and Atlético last faced each other in 1959 in the semi-finals of the European Cup . Real won the first leg 2-1, while Atlético won the second leg 1-0. Since the away goals rule did not yet exist at that time, a playoff was scheduled on a neutral pitch - the Estadio La Romareda in Saragossa - in which Real won 2-1. In the 2013/14 season of the Spanish league , Atlético beat Real 1-0 away and played 2-2 at home; In the semifinals of the Spanish Cup , Real won the home game against Atlético 3-0 and the away game 2-0.

real Madrid

Real Madrid last won the title in 2002 in the final against Bayer Leverkusen . With this cup win by the Galactic ended a series of three successes in five years under Vicente del Bosque , only in 2014 did the team reach the Champions League final again. From 2005 to 2010 the team was eliminated six times in a row in the round of 16 and did not meet the demands of the richest football club in the world; In addition, the club embarrassed itself in the 2009 Copa del Rey by being eliminated from the third division club AD Alcorcón . It was not until the 2010/11 season that the “Royal” reached the semi-finals three times in a row with José Mourinho as coach . In the last two years they have lost to German teams: in 2012 Bayern Munich after a tie only on penalties and in 2013 Borussia Dortmund , not least because of Robert Lewandowski's sensational four goals in the first leg. After the mutual separation from Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti took over the team as coach in mid-2013; the race for the Spanish championship in 2014 ended third behind Atlético and eternal rival FC Barcelona , which they defeated in the Copa del Rey final.

As runners-up in 2013 , Real was a direct participant in the Champions League. Only against Juventus Turin they played away in Group B, the other five games were won by the team and were prematurely group winners ahead of Galatasaray Istanbul , Turin and FC Copenhagen . In the knockout round, the team was then drawn exclusively from German teams. In the round of 16, FC Schalke 04 were outclassed 6-1 in their stadium, and at home they won 3-1. The revenge against Borussia Dortmund also succeeded in the quarter-finals: in the 3-0 home win, the guests could not use their chances without the suspended Lewandowski, with this cushion the team reached the semifinals despite the 0-2 defeat in the second leg. There Real met Bayern Munich, against whom they last won a knockout round in 2004. In the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu they countered 1-0, in the second leg the Merengues then, after a brilliant performance 4-0, brought the Munich team their highest home defeat in the European Cup.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético coach Diego Simeone

Atlético Madrid had to overcome a long dry spell after the double of the Spanish league title and cup win in 1996, the low point of which was relegation in 2000 . In the following season there was even a risk of falling into the third division ; with the coach Luis Aragonés in 2002 then succeeded in sovereign promotion to the Primera División . This was followed by mixed seasons, which were characterized by little consistency on the field and on the coaching bench. Success was only achieved under Quique Flores : winning the Europa League in 2010 won the first international title since 1962 , and Atlético also made it into the cup final at national level . Mediocre results in the Spanish league led to further coach changes until the team, led by Diego Simeone, who was signed in 2011, was able to repeat the Europa League triumph in 2012 and also beat Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup final. In the following season they established themselves as a top team with the Spanish Cup victory and direct qualification for the Champions League . In the 2013/14 national competition , Atlético was never worse than third from the start, had been top of the table since matchday 29 and secured the Spanish championship title with a draw against FC Barcelona in the last league game.

As third in the Primera División 2013 , Atlético had also qualified directly for the Champions League. The group stage ended after five wins and a draw at group runner-up Zenit Saint Petersburg with a clear lead in first place and had already secured the round of 16 before the last match day; the FC Porto and FK Austria Wien was beaten in both the Estadio Vicente Calderón as well as abroad. In the round of 16, the team also won two wins against AC Milan . It was closer in the quarter-finals against FC Barcelona : after creating a good starting point in the away game with 1-1, the team won the second leg with a goal from Koke . The goalless semi-final first leg in their own stadium against Chelsea was characterized by the infamous defensive tactics of their coach José Mourinho , whose disciplined execution effectively neutralized the attacking efforts of the Colchoneros . In the second leg at Stamford Bridge , the team turned a 0-1 deficit into a 3-1 win and made the first city derby in a European football final perfect.

Course of the game

The playing field at the opening ceremony

After eight minutes, coach Simeone had to replace striker Diego Costa, as his injury made it impossible to continue playing. Gareth Bale had the first big chance of the game in the 32nd minute when he was able to intercept the ball after a bad pass by Tiago in the build-up, played around the defense and shot just wide of the goal. Just minutes later, Diego Godín gave Atlético the lead after winning a header against Sami Khedira . Real goalkeeper Casillas made the mistake of walking out of the gate and Godin lifted the ball over him into the goal. Atlético had perhaps the greatest chance to make it 2-0 in the 41st minute, when Adrián López headed freely from a corner from seven meters away, but headed the ball over the goal.

The second half essentially consisted of a single attack by Reals on the opponent's goal. Real's coach Carlo Ancelotti moved Fábio Coentrão and Khedira with Marcelo and Isco made. Khedira had previously had to pause for several months because of a cruciate ligament tear . His job was mainly to play a little offset behind Luka Modrić, with whom he formed Real's double six.

Atlético defended with almost all of the players and hardly tried to make it 2-0 towards the end of the game. In terms of fitness, Atlético had reached the end of the game and last time came dangerously in front of the opposing goal in the 72nd minute when David Villa slipped in with a stretched leg against Iker Casillas . A minute later, Bale had his second of a total of three missed big chances during regular time when he came free to shoot from 18 meters away, but aimed past the goal. He had his third big chance in the 78th minute, when he again penetrated dangerously into the penalty area. In the final quarter of an hour, the chances for Real Madrid piled up, but it was not until the third minute of the total of five minutes of stoppage time before Sergio Ramos was able to escape his guard Diego Godín after a corner kicked by Luka Modrić and headed the late 1-1 equalizer . In extra time, Atlético's team was more exhausted than Real. Both teams had exhausted their transfer contingent and could no longer substitute.

Real Madrid continued to dominate the game and after a remarkable run by Ángel Di Marías , in which he overcame three opponents, he shot the ball sharply towards Atlético's goal. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois blocked the ball, but it jumped to Bale. This headed the ball to 2-1 into the empty goal. When Marcelo's goal to make it 3-1, Atlético's defense showed signs of disintegration when the Brazilian was able to advance unhindered to the edge of the penalty area and pull away. Cristiano Ronaldo broke into Atlético's penalty area shortly afterwards and was fouled by Gabi. The Portuguese Ronaldo converted the penalty himself and scored his 17th goal in the current tournament, which is a new record. During the celebration of Ronaldo's goal, Varane shot the ball at Atlético coach Diego Simeone , who stormed onto the pitch in anger. Simeone and Varane were punished for their behavior; Varane got the yellow card and Simeone had to go into the stands.

Simeone later called Diego Costa's lineup a mistake and apologized for it.

reception

While Real Madrid won their tenth title in the UEFA Champions League and the European Cup, the fate for Atlético was repeated in a particularly tragic way: in the 1973/74 European Cup , the Colchoneros led in the 120th minute of the In the final against FC Bayern Munich 1-0, before their central defender "Katsche" Schwarzenbeck fired a desperate shot from more than thirty meters away from the goal immediately before the final whistle, which shortly afterwards floundered into Atletico's goal net. In the replay Atlético had no chance and lost 4-0. Again, Atlético led 1-0 when Real Madrid center-back Sergio Ramos scored the late equalizer in the third minute of stoppage time. In the extension that followed, the Colchoneros also had no chance.

After the game, Juanfran explained the effect of the late equalizer on his team: "That goal killed us." And his teammate Toby Alderweireld added: "We were completely broken and were only hoping for the penalty shoot-out."

As a result of this game, the FAZ drew in its issue of May 26, 2014: “Football has a special dialectic, it doesn't just know one truth. Both were true: If Atlético had also blocked this one ball in the 94th minute, they would have been a worthy, deserved winner. But Real made the balance - and was the worthy, deserved winner. "
