At the age of 14 he came to Figueirense FC to start his career in its youth division. In 2003 and 2004 Filipe Luís won the national championship of Santa Catarina with the first team of Figueirense FC .

Unsuccessful beginnings in Europe (2004 to 2006)

In the 2004/05 season , the then 18-year-old moved to Ajax Amsterdam on loan to the Netherlands . In the Dutch capital, Luís could not get by and was attested to a lack of professionalism. Although he hadn't played in a competitive game for the Amsterdam team, the club helped him learn tactical aspects of the game and supported his career, training with players like Rafael van der Vaart and Wesley Sneijder .

In August 2005, Luís was hired by the Uruguayan club Club Atlético Rentistas , which had a partnership with his agent Juan Figer. A short time later he was loaned to Real Madrid in Spain , where he spent the entire season in the B team in the second division. A firm commitment failed due to high transfer demands from Club Atlético Rentistas. Luís describes his time at both Ajax and Real Madrid Castilla in these words: “I've had moments when I went out and drank more than I should have. Fortunately, my father got me back on track. "

Breakthrough in La Coruña and successes with Atlético Madrid (2006 to 2014)

In August 2006, Luís switched to Deportivo La Coruña on loan with an option to buy . In his first season he did not get many appearances, but a clause extended the loan for another year. After Joan Capdevila had left Deportivo for the 2007/08 season , Luís conquered a regular place. He was signed on June 10, 2008 and signed a five-year contract. In the 2008/09 season he was the only Deportivo field player who was used in all 38 games. He scored two goals. On January 23, 2010, Luís injured his left fibula during the 3-1 home win against Athletic Bilbao ; at this point he was used in all games during the season and Deportivo La Coruña was in fourth place. Four months later he was used in the 1-0 win against RCD Mallorca and prepared the goal for Riki ; the Galicians finished tenth at the end of the season. With Atlético he won the 2011/12 UEFA Europa League , the 2012 UEFA Super Cup , the 2012/13 Copa del Rey and played in the UEFA Champions League in the 2013/14 season . In the league, he was part of a defense that conceded only 26 goals in 38 games this season, and thus contributed to the first championship title since 1996. He made ten appearances in the UEFA Champions League and reached the final with Atlético Madrid, which they lost to city rivals Real Madrid 4-1 after extra time. In the same summer, Luís was voted the best defender in the Primera División alongside his compatriot and teammate João Miranda and Sergio Ramos . At Atlético Madrid Luís rose to a "world class" left-back.

Unsuccessful interlude at Chelsea FC (2014 to 2015)

He scored his only goal for Chelsea on December 16, 2014 in a 3-1 win over Derby County in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with a free kick from 25 meters. In May 2016, Luís was again in the final of the UEFA Champions League with Atlético Madrid and lost again to Real Madrid on penalties. On March 15, 2018 Luís withdrew in the second round of the UEFA Europa League 2017/18 in the second leg against Lokomotiv Moscow a fraction of the fibula to and should allow both the rest of the season and the 2018 World Cup in Russia miss, could, however, after two months report fit.
