Teams
Eleven clubs reached the final when they first participated: Real Madrid and Stade Reims (1955/56 when they first played), Fiorentina (1956/57 after their first championship title in Italy), Eintracht Frankfurt (1959/60, after that to date only German championship), Inter Milan (1963/64), Celtic Glasgow (1966/67), Nottingham Forest (1978/79, after the only English championship title to date), Hamburger SV (1979/80), Aston Villa (1981 / 82), AS Roma (1983/84) and Sampdoria Genoa (1991/92, after the only championship title to date in Italy).
AC Milan, Ajax Amsterdam, Hamburger SV, Olympique Marseille and FC Chelsea won their first title on the second attempt after an earlier final defeat, Juventus Turin and FC Barcelona only on the third attempt after two lost finals. All other title holders achieved their first victory when they entered the finals for the first time.
The defending champion was able to reach the final again 21 times the following year. Real Madrid achieved this most often with six times. Four times in the early years of the national championship cup (1956 / 57–1959 / 60) and in 2016/17, in which one team managed to defend its title again after 27 years, and in 2017/18. Benfica Lisbon, FC Liverpool, AC Milan, Juventus Turin, Manchester United and Ajax Amsterdam were each unable to defend their title. The defeated finalist was able to reach the final five times in the following year: AC Milan (1993/94), FC Bayern Munich (2012/13) and FC Liverpool (2018/19) then won the title, Juventus Turin (1997/98 ) and Valencia CF (2000/01) lost again.
There were nine final pairings twice in the course of history. Four times it was a successful revenge: Ajax Amsterdam won and lost one final each against Juventus Turin and AC Milan, Liverpool FC won and lost one final each against Real Madrid and also against AC Milan. The revenge failed five times and led to a second defeat against the same club: Stade Reims, Atlético Madrid and Juventus Turin lost again to Real Madrid, Manchester United to FC Barcelona and Benfica Lisbon to AC Milan.
Most frequently, clubs from Spain (7 times, 1955/56 to 1961/62) and Italy (7 times, 1991/92 to 1997/98) reached the final. English clubs won the title most frequently one after the other (6 times, 1976/77 to 1981/82), but also lost the final most frequently one after the other (4 times, 2005/06 to 2008/09).
The most common were Italian-Spanish duels (8 times). Clubs from the same country faced each other seven times in the final: 2000 Real Madrid and FC Valencia from Spain, 2003 AC Milan and Juventus Turin from Italy, 2008 Manchester United and FC Chelsea from England and in 2013 Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund Germany; In 2014 there was the first city-internal final between Real and Atlético Madrid, which was repeated in 2016 . In 2019 there was another all-English final between Liverpool FC and Tottenham Hotspur.
Results and goals
Of the 65 finals played so far, 17 went into overtime . Five were decided by this, eleven finals only by a subsequent penalty shoot-out . 1974 was the only time a replay was scheduled, since at that time a penalty shootout was not yet part of the regulations.
Sixteen times the final ended with a result of 1: 0, ten times with 2: 1 and eight times with 2: 0.
The most goals in finals were scored by Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás . Both scored 7 goals each for Real Madrid , with Puskás being the only player to date to score four goals in a final and a "flawless" hat-trick in a 7-3 win against Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960 . This game was also the highest-scoring final of the competition ever.
