Of the 45 finals played so far (up to 1997, the first and second legs considered together), ten went into overtime . Three were then decided in this, with the so-called silver goal rule in force in 2003 . Since the winning goal was only scored in the second half of extra time, this rule did not affect the outcome. The 2001 final was decided by Golden Goal for Liverpool FC. In six finals, extra time was followed by a penalty shoot-out , as it was still a draw after extra time.

The 1973 UEFA Cup final between Borussia Mönchengladbach and Liverpool FC had to be canceled on May 9th due to rain. It was repeated a day later.

Up to and including the 1996/97 season, the UEFA Cup winners were determined in the two legs. A team won the cup three times because of the number of away goals scored (Juventus Turin 1977 , Eintracht Frankfurt 1980 , Ajax Amsterdam 1992 ).

Fourteen finals (until 1997 only the first or second leg) have ended with a result of 1-0, eleven times with 3-0, eight times with 1-1 and seven times with 2-0.

Clubs from the same country faced each other ten times in the final, in 1972 and 2019 from England, 1980 from Germany, 1990 , 1991 , 1995 , 1998 from Italy, 2007 from Spain, 2011 from Portugal and 2012 again from Spain.

Teams that had initially qualified as national champions for the Champions League or its qualification won three times (Galatasaray Istanbul 2000 , CSKA Moscow 2005 and Shakhtar Donetsk 2009 ).

Since the introduction of the final, two teams have played this in their own stadium (Feyenoord Rotterdam 2002 and Sporting Lisbon 2005 ), but only Feyenoord could win it.

With Porto 2011 and Manchester United 2017 , two national cup winners won.

Ranking lists of the venues

The most frequent venue with four finals so far was the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium in Milan. Turin is the city that has hosted the largest number of finals, with five games in three different stadiums. The most frequent host with 14 finals so far is Germany. One each was held in Austria and Switzerland. Up to and including the 1996/97 season, the first and second leg are counted individually. Only those venues are listed in which a final has taken place at least twice.
