The Locarno Film Festival (until 2016 Festival del film Locarno , 2017–2018 Locarno Festival ) has been held every August since 1946 in the city of Locarno in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . It is one of the oldest film festivals in the world , after the Venice Film Festival and the Moscow Film Festival , both of which were founded in the 1930s, and alongside the Cannes Film Festival and the Karlovy Vary Film Festival (both founded in 1946) .

Like these, it is one of the film art festivals with a feature film competition according to the specifications of the FIAPF film producers' association (A-category festival). The 74th festival will take place from August 4th to 14th, 2021.

During eleven days, hundreds of films will be shown in various series, retrospectives and in the competition for the Golden Leopard . A number of film screenings take place as an open-air event on the Piazza Grande in the old town of Locarno on a large screen (26 × 14 m). There is space for around 8,000 spectators.

The Locarno Film Festival has a long tradition in auteur films . These are those films in which the director essentially determines all artistic aspects of the film, such as the script or editing, and is seen as the (sole) author of the film.

The incumbent director from 2000, the Italian film critic Irene Bignardi , stood for the content and artistic continuity of the selection of films with social and political content. In summer 2004 there were over 350 at the 57th Locarno International Film Festival.

From August 2005 the director of the Locarno Film Festival was named Frédéric Maire . At the beginning of June 2008 it was announced that the 44-year-old Neuchâtel film journalist and director Maire is leaving his post prematurely and will take up work as director of the Swiss Film Archive on November 1, 2009 . On September 1, 2009, Olivier Père , previously based in Cannes , took over the management of the film festival. At the end of August 2012, after three years, he gave up the post of Artistic Director to take up the post of General Director of Arte France Cinéma at the beginning of November . At the beginning of September 2012, the Italian film critic and author Carlo Chatrian , from 2001 to 2007 Vice Director of the Alba Film Festival , was appointed Père's successor. On August 24, 2018, Lili Hinstin was elected Artistic Director by the Board of Directors of the film festival; she succeeded Chatrian in this role on December 1, 2018. Chatrian moved to the Berlinale in May 2019 . In September 2020, the Locarno Film Festival and Lili Hinstin ended their collaboration due to differing views on the future strategy. Their deputy Nadia Dresti took over the management on an interim basis. In November 2020 it was announced that Giona A. Nazzaro would take over the artistic direction in 2021.

In 2009 anime was the focus of the festival. Isao Takahata was honored with the Leopard of Honor for his life's work.

The 73rd edition, which was supposed to take place from August 5th to 15th, 2020, has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic ; Instead, the special edition “Locarno 2020 - For the Future of Film” will take place, which is designed for a year zero and is intended to welcome films and viewers to the large web space and the valuable local cinemas. An audience from around the world with whom to discover today's first visions, support tomorrow's films and explore projects that enrich the history of cinema and the festival.

Economic importance for the region

The festival - with a total budget of 10 million Swiss francs - is supported with public funding of 2.5 million francs from the canton and a further 1.3 million annually from the national government.

According to a study by the University of Italian Switzerland (USI) in Lugano commissioned by the Ticino State Council in 2005, 12 to 13 million francs remain in the region for just under two weeks, which means that the regional economic balance is clearly positive.

The statistically determined average film festival visitor “spends 123 francs a day, is female, between 30 and 40 years old, comes from German-speaking Switzerland, has a high level of education and a medium to high income”. The social researchers speak of “tourist potential” with regard to cultural offers and gastronomy that are specifically geared towards the educated public, which occurs here in large numbers.

Concorso Internationale - International competition

Since 1968, the main prize for the best competition film has been the Pardo d'oro , the Golden Leopard . The prize money of 90,000 Swiss francs (currently around 78,000 euros) associated with the award goes equally to the director and the producers of the winning film.

  • Pardo d'oro Cineasti del presente. Has been awarded to the best film in the concorso Cineasti del presente category since 2006 .
  • Premio speciale della giuria Ciné + Cineasti del presente (special prize of the jury). The French television station Ciné + Club guarantees that the film that will be awarded the special prize will be purchased by Ciné + Club and thus broadcast via the broadcaster.
  • Pardo per la migliore opera great. The prize was awarded between 2006 and 2009 to the best first work from the concorso internationale and concorso Cineasti del presente competitions.

The Pardo d'onore Swisscom honors contemporary filmmakers who represent the filmmaking that has been the focus of the festival since its inception. The winners of the last editions of the Pardo d'onore Swisscom were Manoel de Oliveira , Bernardo Bertolucci , Ken Loach , Jean-Luc Godard , Terry Gilliam , Aleksandr Sokurov , Hou Hsiao-hsien , William Friedkin , Alain Tanner , Jia Zhangke , Leos Carax , Werner Herzog , Agnès Varda and Michael Cimino . Alejandro Jodorowsky was selected as the winner in 2016, Bruno Dumont in 2018 , John Waters in 2019 and John Landis in 2021 .

Excellence Award

The Excellence Award honors exceptional actors from the international film scene. This new award aims to honor personalities who, with their creations and work behind the scenes, help broaden the horizons of cinema.

Premio Cinema Ticino

Since 2009, the prize has been awarded every two years to personalities from the film industry who originally come from Ticino or have lived in the Swiss canton for at least five years.

Leopard Club Award

The Leopard Club Award , named after the association that supports the festival, each year honors a figure on the international film scene, which has shaped their work, the imagination of the audience.

Audience Award Statuette (2013)

In addition to an official jury made up of film and culture professionals, the festival also has an audience jury. Every evening, it evaluates the films shown on the Piazza Grande in order to award the Prix ​​du Public prize . Variety Piazza Grande Award
