Bruno Dumont (born March 14, 1958 in Bailleul (North) ) is a French film director and screenwriter .

Life

Prior to his film career, Dumont taught philosophy and made commercials. His feature films have won several awards at the Cannes Film Festival . L'Humanité and Flanders (2006) each received the Grand Jury Prize . The Life of Jesus (1997) was awarded a Golden Camera - special mention .

Dumont's film Camille Claudel 1915 with Juliette Binoche was invited to the competition at the 63rd Berlinale . In 2016 he received his third invitation to compete at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival for Ma loute (English-language festival title: Slack Bay ) .

His films often show the ugliness of extreme violence and provocative sexual behavior.

Bruno Dumont shot several times with the French actor David Dewaele , who died in 2013 , including Flanders , Hadewijch and Hors Satan . The latter received very benevolent reviews from international critics and the press, including The New York Times and The Guardian .

In 2017, Dumont's film adaptation of Jeanne d'Arc's childhood came out as a heavy metal or hip-hop musical: Jeannette - The Childhood of Jeanne d'Arc . The follow-up film Jeanne d'Arc (each with Lise Leplat Prudhomme as Jeanne d'Arc) - which also works with musical elements - was shown in Cannes in 2019 in the " Un Certain Regard " series. Both films are based on plays by Charles Péguy .
