Nikola Kalinić (born January 5, 1988 in Solin ) is a Croatian football player who has been under contract with AS Roma as a loan player from Atlético Madrid since the beginning of September 2019 .

Career

Kalinić started his career at Hajduk Split . For the 2005/06 season he moved to NK Istra on loan in 1961 . After half a year there it was awarded to the HNK Šibenik . In the 2007/08 season he played again for Hajduk Split. In the summer of 2009 Kalinić moved to the English first division club Blackburn Rovers . After two years he went to the Ukrainian club Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk . In the 2014/15 season he reached the final of the UEFA Europa League against defending champions Sevilla FC with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk . In this Kalinić scored the 1-0 in the 7th minute, but Dnipro lost the game 2: 3.

In August 2015 Kalinić moved to the Italian Serie A at Fiorentina .

In August 2017, Kalinić moved to AC Milan on loan with a subsequent purchase obligation . He received a contract until June 30, 2021.

In August 2018, Kalinić moved to Atlético Madrid . However, he could not prevail in the center of the storm against Diego Costa , Antoine Griezmann and Álvaro Morata , who was signed in January 2019 . Kalinić came in the league on 17 appearances (7 times from the start), in which he scored 2 goals.

At the beginning of September 2019, Kalinić moved on loan to AS Roma for 2 million euros until the end of the 2019/20 season , which will then have the option to purchase his transfer rights for 9 million euros.

National team

Kalinić completed three games for the Croatian U-21 national team, but could not qualify with his team for the 2009 U-21 European Football Championship . On May 24, 2008, he played his first game for the Croatian national soccer team when he was substituted on for the game against Moldova. He took part in the European Football Championship in 2008 and came there to a job when he was substituted for the game against Poland. Kalinić was initially not nominated for the European Football Championship 2012 . However, he benefited from Ivica Olić's injury-related cancellation and was nominated.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Croatian squad . In the third game of the preliminary round, in the 2-1 win against Spain , he was used for the first time and achieved the interim equalization to 1: 1. He reached the round of 16 with Croatia as group winners and played there again as a substitute in extra time against Portugal. The game was lost 0-1 and the team was eliminated.

In 2018 Kalinić was part of the squad for the World Cup in Russia. In the closing stages of the first group game, he was supposed to be substituted on, but declined with reference to back pain. Since the same thing happened in the friendly against Brazil, the coach sent him home.
