Davide Santon (born January 2, 1991 in Portomaggiore ) is an Italian football player . The defender is under contract with AS Roma in the Italian Serie A.
Career
In the club
Davide Santon comes from the youth department of Inter Milan . During his time in the youth teams, Santon also had offers from top English clubs, such as Chelsea and Manchester United . He made his debut for the professional team of Inter on January 21, 2009 in the Coppa Italia , when he played for the full season against AS Roma . On January 26, 2009 Santon played for the first time in Serie A , the top Italian division, against Sampdoria Genoa . In January 2009 Santon extended his contract with Inter Milan until 2013.
Davide Santon was initially planned as a substitute for Maicon on the right-hand side, but after a period of weakness from regular defender Maxwell, he naturally fitted in on the left and convinced above all with his calm and serenity. He finally became a permanent fixture of the team and darling of the masses in the 2008/09 season and won his first Italian championship with Inter . His strong performance in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 against Manchester United was particularly remembered .
In the following seasons, however, the development of Santon stagnated. In addition, there were two knee injuries that made him pause for a long time. Santon was able to temporarily fight his way back into Inter's starting line-up due to injuries to his teammates, but his game lacked the security of days gone by. For the second half of the 2010/11 season Santon was loaned to AC Cesena . Inter loaned Japanese defender Yūto Nagatomo in return . At the end of August 2011, Santon was sold to the English Premier League club Newcastle United for around 5.5 million euros .
On February 2, 2015, Santon returned to Inter Milan on loan until the end of the 2014/15 season . Santon was firmly committed to the 2015/16 season .
For the 2018/19 season Santon was signed by AS Roma .
In the national team
In 2007 and 2008 Santon completed 18 missions for the U-16 , U-17 and U-20 national teams of Italy , in which he scored four goals. On March 31, 2009 Santon made his debut for the U-21 national team against the Netherlands . By 2012, 16 more games followed, in which he played for the Azzurrini .
Due to his strong performance at Inter Milan , Santon was appointed to the squad for the Confederations Cup 2009 in South Africa on June 4, 2009 by national coach Marcello Lippi . On June 6, 2009 he made his debut for the Italian national team in a 3-0 win against Northern Ireland and stood over the full distance on the field. He was also active in the following test against New Zealand . Although he remained in the Confederations Cup without use, Lippi nominated him in the following months. He was not considered for the 2010 World Cup , but was used again in November 2010 and March 2011 under Cesare Prandelli .
Thereafter there were no further nominations for Santon for the time being, but he celebrated his comeback in February 2013 against the Netherlands , which is his last international appearance so far. In March and October 2015 he was invited back to the national team by Antonio Conte , but remained without further commitment.
