Marek Suchý (born March 29, 1988 in Prague ) is a Czech football player . The defender is under contract with FC Augsburg and is a Czech national player.
Club career
Slavia Prague
Marek Suchý already played in the Gambrinus League , the top division in Czech football , at the age of 17 . In his first professional season 2005/06 he came on 21 appearances and was voted the best young player of the season, the following year he came on 16 appearances. In September 2009, Suchý played his 100th first division game at the age of 21. In the game against Slovan Liberec , which ended 1-1, he led the Slavia team as captain on the field. He then acted permanently as the team captain.
Spartak Moscow
In the 2010 season Suchý played on loan at the Russian club Spartak Moscow . He was then firmly committed by this. In 84 league games he scored five goals. Internationally, he made 20 appearances in the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League .
FC Basel
Since January 2014 Suchý was on loan in the Swiss Super League at FC Basel 1893 under contract. He made his Super League debut on February 2, 2014 in a 3-1 away win at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise against FC Lausanne-Sport . Three days later, on February 5, 2014, he scored his first goal for FC Basel: In the quarter-finals of the Swiss Cup against FC Le Mont , he scored the goal to make it 2-0. Suchy became Swiss champion at the end of the season .
On July 1, 2014, FC Basel made use of its purchase option and signed a three-year contract with Suchý. The 2014/15 season was very successful for Suchy and FCB. The team finished the soccer championship 2014/15 for the 18th time as champions (for the 6th time in a row) with 12 points ahead of the 2nd placed BSC Young Boys and 25 points ahead of 3rd placed FC Zurich . Basel was also in the final of the Swiss Cup , which it lost to FC Sion 0-3. In the 2014/15 Champions League season , Basel advanced to the round of 16. During the season, FC Basel played a total of 65 games (36 championship, 6 cups, 8 Champions League and 15 test games). Under coach Paulo Sousa , Suchy had a total of 48 appearances, including 30 in the Super League, 4 in the Cup, 7 in the Champions League, and 11 in test matches. He scored 4 goals, 1 of them in the Super League and 1 in the Champions League. In January 2016, he prematurely extended his contract until summer 2019.
Under coach Urs Fischer , Suchý won the championship title with FCB for the third and fourth time at the end of the 2015/16 championship and the 2016/17 championship . For the club it was the 8th title in a row and the 20th title in the club's history. They also won the cup competition on May 25, 2017 with three to zero against Sion and thus the double . In total, the Czech played 224 times in competitive games for the club in five years and scored 14 goals. Suchý left FC Basel at the end of the 2018/19 season.
FC Augsburg
On July 8, 2019, the defender signed a contract with German Bundesliga club FC Augsburg until June 30, 2021.
National team
Suchý previously played for the Czech junior teams U16, U17, U19, U20 and U21. In the summer of 2007 he was runner-up with the Czech U20 world champions at the World Cup in Canada , which he almost couldn't take part in because of a facial fracture that he suffered against Luboš Pecka . In March 2009 Suchý was called up for the first time in the Czech national team, but was not used at that time. He finally made his debut in the European Championship qualifier on October 8, 2010 against Scotland (1-0).
At the Euro 2016 in France he was accepted into the Czech squad , although he was banned from the first tournament game due to being sent off in the last qualifying game. But he was not used in the other two games and was one of two field players in the squad who was not taken into account. The Czech Republic was eliminated after the group stage. Suchý has led the team as team captain at times since 2015.
