from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This article covers the Hungarian national team at the 2016 European Football Championship in France . For Hungary it was the third participation in the European Championship and the first since 1972.

qualification

Hungary completed the qualification for the European Championship in Group F . The Hungarians, who were only drawn from the second best pot in the group draw, began qualifying under Attila Pintér . After the first game, a 1: 2 home defeat against Northern Ireland, his tenure ended and Pál Dárdai , youth coach at Hertha BSC, took over the post on an interim basis. For the first game he brought Gábor Király back into goal, who had not played for a year and with whom he played at Hertha BSC until 2011. He got off to a good start with a 1-1 draw in Romania. After there was no defeat in the following games, he was to remain head coach until the end of qualification. In February 2015, Dárdai took over the 17th place in the table from Hertha BSC and resigned as national coach on July 20, 2015. His successor was Bernd Storck , who had been sports director at the Hungarian Football Association since the beginning of March 2015. Under him, the Hungarians secured third place in the table and only lost the last game against the Greeks, who had not yet been won. When they were third in the group, they were qualified for the play-offs of the third group and met Norway. With two wins, the Hungarians qualified for the first time for a European Championship finals with a group phase and thus for the first time after 1986 for a major tournament. With a goal difference of +2 in the group matches, the Hungarians had the worst goal difference of all qualified teams and only Albania, which played two fewer group matches, scored fewer goals from the qualified teams.

Overall, the three coaches used 37 players, only Balázs Dzsudzsák in all twelve games. Tamás Kádár had one less bet . Dániel Böde , Krisztián Németh and Tamás Priskin scored the most qualifying goals from ten goalscorers for the Hungarians , who each scored two goals. Balázs Balogh made his first international appearance in the first qualifying match. Other newcomers came Dénes Dibusz and Attila Fiola in the game on the Faroe Islands, Gyula Forró in the first game against Finland, Ádám Nagy in the second game against Northern Ireland, Ádám Bódi in the second game against the Faroe Islands and László Kleinheisler in the first game. off game against Norway for their first full international match. In this, Kleinheisler scored the winning goal with his first international goal and the 40-year-old Gábor Király was the first Hungarian to make his 100th international match recognized by FIFA . In the last playoff game, he set József Bozsik's 53-year-old record , for which FIFA only rated 96 international matches.

In the course of qualification, Hungary improved from 38th to 20th in the FIFA world rankings , achieving its best-ever ranking.

Group draw

Venues (green = won, yellow = draw, black = not yet played), quarters (blue)

In the draw for the six final groups on December 12, 2015, Hungary was placed in Pot 3. Hungary was drawn into group F with Portugal, Austria and Euro newcomer Iceland. Of all European teams, Austria and Hungary played against each other the most: 136 times before the European Championship - only Argentina and Uruguay played against each other more often. The Hungarians won 65 games, there was no winner in 31 games and the Austrians won 40 games. The last time they met each other was on August 16, 2006 in Graz and Hungary won 2-1. The Hungarians could never win against Portugal in ten games. So far, there have only been three draws in seven defeats, most recently in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. Both will meet again in qualifying for the 2018 World Cup . Against Iceland, seven out of ten games were won, three - in three consecutive games between 1992 and 1995 of the qualifications for the 1994 World Cup and the 1996 European Championship - were lost.

The Hungarians started with a 2-0 win against the favored Austrians and drew against Iceland with a late own goal . Based on the results of the other groups, it was already clear before the last game that the Hungarians had reached the round of 16. Coach Bernd Storck therefore did without players in the last game who had already received a yellow card . In an open exchange of blows, the Hungarians took the lead after 19 minutes with a long-range shot by their oldest field player Zoltán Gera , but had to accept the equalizer a few minutes before the half-time break. Shortly after the break they brought captain Balázs Dzsudzsák back into the lead with a directly converted, but for the goalkeeper unsustainable free kick, which Cristiano Ronaldo equalized three minutes later with his first goal at this European Championship. Dzsudzsák was able to give the Hungarians the lead again five minutes later with a deflected shot, which Ronaldo equalized again seven minutes later. In the end, both were satisfied with the 3: 3, as the Portuguese made it to the round of 16 and the Hungarians became group winners.

In the round of 16 they met Belgium, which finished second in Group E. Belgium won clearly 4-0.

The European Championship games helped Hungary gain 29 points in the FIFA world rankings and move up one place.
