On August 6, 2005 he made his debut for Burnley when he came on against Crewe Alexandra in the 89th minute for Garreth O'Connor. In January 2006 he was loaned for one year to Darlington FC , where he played nine games and scored three goals. In 2007 he returned to Burnley FC and finally moved to Glasgow Rangers for £ 3m in June 2008 . For the 2012/13 season Lafferty moved to the Swiss first division club FC Sion , with whom he signed a three-year contract.

On June 26, 2013, he moved to the newly relegated Italian second division club US Palermo .

In the summer of 2014 he moved to Norwich City . For the second half of the 2014/15 season Lafferty was loaned to the Turkish first division club Çaykur Rizespor . From March 24, 2016 until the end of the 2015/2016 season, Lafferty was loaned to Birmingham City and was used in 6 of the remaining 9 league games. After Lafferty had been under contract with Heart of Midlothian since the summer of 2017 , he returned to the Glasgow Rangers in August 2018 and signed a two-year contract there. National team

From the U17 to the U21, Kyle Lafferty has already played in Northern Ireland's youth teams. On September 2, 2006, he played for the first time as a substitute in the senior national team . But he couldn't change anything about the result of 0: 3 against Iceland at the start of the European Championship qualification. Overall, he was used in 10 of the 12 qualifying games and scored 2 goals.

In the next two major tournaments he was only used irregularly in the qualifying games. In the 2012/13 World Cup qualifying, he was a regular player in the first four games, but then dropped out of the squad again. In qualifying for the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was finally able to prevail. In the first three games, all of which were won, he scored one goal each. Overall, he played 9 of the 10 group games - once he had to sit out due to a yellow card suspension - and scored 7 of the 16 Northern Irish goals. The EM preparatory game against Belarus on May 27, 2016, in which he scored his 17th international goal, was his 50th game in the national jersey. He was accepted as a regular in the EM squad and played in the opening game against Poland from the start. After the 1-0 defeat, coach O'Neill tried a new offensive line-up without Lafferty in the second game against Ukraine. Only in the third group match against Germany did he return to the team as a substitute. Northern Ireland reached the round of 16, where he was back on the starting line-up, and was eliminated 1-0 against Wales.
