Career

societies

McLaughlin played from July 1, 2009 for Preston North End in the English second division . At the end of the 2010/11 season , in which he had only come to seven missions, the club rose as the penultimate in the third division. In the third division season 2011/12 , he came to 17 appearances, but as fifteenth in the table Preston had no chance to return directly to the second division. From January 31 to April 22, 2012 he was loaned to the fourth division club Shrewsbury Town , where he won four games of which only one but had a small share in the fact that the club was runner-up at the end of the season Third division promotion. After the loan ended, he returned to Preston North End and was active there until July 2012. This was followed by the move to fourth division league team Fleetwood Town . In the first fourth division season "The Trawlermen" established themselves as thirteenth in the league. In the 2013/14 season he missed direct promotion with Fleetwood as fourth, but was able to make it perfect in the promotion playoff games. As a newcomer Fleetwood finished 10th in the final table in the third division season 2014/15 . McLaughlin was used in 39 games and scored one goal. In the 2015/16 season Fleetwood occupied a place in the bottom third of the table, but had five points ahead of a relegation place. After the 2016/17 season he moved to the English second division club Millwall . In two seasons for the London club, he was only used irregularly. In July 2019, he moved back to the third division and signed a contract with Sunderland AFC .

National teams

In October 2009 he took part with the U-19 team in the first qualifying round for the U-19 European Football Championship 2010 , which the Northern Irish survived together with Bosnia-Herzegovina . In the second qualifying round in May 2010 at the mini-tournament in Moscow , they finished fourth behind Italy , the hosts and the Czech Republic , with McLaughlin making it 2-2 in the 3-2 draw against Italy. Two months earlier, he was already in the U-21s for a qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2011 against San Marino. Four more missions for the U-21 followed in 2011 and 2012 in the qualification for the U-21 European Championship 2013 .

He made his debut for the Northern Irish national team as a U-21 national player on October 11, 2011 in the 3-0 defeat against Italy in qualifying for the 2012 European Football Championship . He came on as a substitute for Oliver Norwood in the 74th minute . After that, McLaughlin was not considered for a long time. It wasn't until 2014 that two more test matches followed on a trip to South America against Chile and Uruguay . He then became a regular on the right side of defense and played 9 of the 10 group games in qualifying for the 2016 European Football Championship in France. Then he was also included in Northern Ireland 's EM squad . In the first tournament game against Poland , which the Northern Irish attacked with a defensive attitude, but still lost 0-1, he was part of the starting line-up and played over 90 minutes. In the second game against Ukraine , which brought the Northern Irish their first victory in a European Championship final match with a more offensive line-up, he was not used. In the other two games up to the elimination in the round of 16, he did not return to the team.
