Lynden Jack Gooch (born December 24, 1995 in Santa Cruz , California ) is an American football player .

The midfielder currently plays for the English first division AFC Sunderland .

Life

Lynden Gooch comes from Santa Cruz, California. His father is from the UK and his mother from Ireland . He is the youngest of four brothers.

Career

youth

Gooch played for local youth soccer club Santa Cruz Breakers when he was young. At the same time, he has traveled to England every year since he was ten years old, either in spring or summer, to train at the Sunderland AFC youth academy. While he was training with the Santa Cruz Breakers, his father kept the Sunderland club informed of his son's training progress.

In 2012 he moved to England and played for the club's U-16s.

Sunderland AFC

Gooch moved to the reserve team at Sunderland AFC in 2014 and was loaned to the fifth division Gateshead FC in February 2015 . There he played seven games and scored one goal. On August 26, 2015 he made his debut for the first team of the "Black Cats". In the League Cup game against Exceter City he was substituted on in the 58th minute. Half a year later Gooch was loaned out again to the Doncaster Rovers. In Football League One he played 10 games.

Between these loan periods he was part of the Sunderland U-23 squad and played 32 Premier League 2 games from 2014 to 2016.

His first appearance in the Premier League took place on August 13, 2016 in the first game of the 2016/2017 season. In the game against Manchester City he was in the starting line-up.

National team

Gooch has the opportunity to play for the national team of the USA, England or Ireland due to his origin. In 2013 he played a game for the Irish U-18 team against Switzerland. He later decided to want to play for the US and completed seven games for the US U-20 selection . In October 2016, Gooch was nominated for the first time for the national soccer team of the United States by US coach Jürgen Klinsmann . He made his debut for the US national team on October 11, 2016 in a friendly against New Zealand.
