Zoltán Gera (born April 22, 1979 in Pécs ) is a former Hungarian football player . The midfielder was most recently under contract with Ferencváros Budapest . Gera has been assistant coach of the Hungarian national team since 2018.
society
Gera started his career in his native Hungary, where he played for Pécsi Mecsek FC and Ferencváros Budapest . On July 30, 2004, he moved for around 1.5 million pounds to the English first division club West Bromwich Albion and at the same time turned down an offer from the Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul , as he preferred to play in the Premier League . The midfielder made his debut on August 14, 2004 in the away game with the Blackburn Rovers in the top English division, when he came in the 87th minute as a substitute for Welsh Andy Johnson on the field. On his third appearance for Albion , he scored his first goal in the Premier League eleven days later. Gera scored in the home game against Tottenham Hotspur in the third minute to open the door for West Bromwich, the game ended in a 1-1 draw. In the course of the season he secured a regular seat and did not give it up again. With a win on the last day of the 2004/05 season , he managed to stay with the team.
In the following season he completed only about half of all competitive games due to injuries and scored three goals for Albion. At the end of the season he rose with the club as second from bottom in the Football League Championship . Gera played with the team for direct promotion and placed after the 2006/07 season with the club in fourth place, which entitled to participate in the playoffs for promotion to the top division. After the Wolverhampton Wanderers were defeated in the semifinals with two wins , the team lost the final game at Wembley Stadium against Derby County and thus missed promotion for the time being. The midfielder was also one of the team's top performers in the following season and secured promotion to the Premier League with Albion as first place.
After rejecting a contract extension with West Bromwich Albion in June 2008, he moved to Fulham FC on a free transfer . He signed a three-year contract with the London club. Also at Fulham he quickly made the leap into the starting eleven, he completed a total of 32 league games for Fulham in the 2008/09 season and scored two goals. With seventh place in the championship, he qualified with the team for the newly created UEFA Europa League .
Gera scored his first goal at European club level on December 3, 2009 in the home game against CSKA Sofia . In the group stage, the runner-up behind AS Roma made it into the next round. In the following two rounds Shakhtar Donetsk and Juventus Turin were defeated, Gera contributed in the four encounters with three goals for the advancement of FC Fulham. The team remained undefeated in the duels with the German Bundesliga clubs VfL Wolfsburg and Hamburger SV and made it into a European Cup final for the first time in the club's history. There the team lost to Atlético Madrid .
The team was unable to match the previous year's performance in the Premier League during the 2009/10 season and was ranked twelfth. Gera was again part of the club's regular squad.
After the 2010/11 season , his contract with Fulham was not renewed. On August 2, 2011, he moved to West Bromwich Albion and signed a two-year contract with the club, for which he had already been active between 2004 and 2008. In 2014 he moved back to Ferencváros Budapest. There he played another 89 league games, scoring 15 goals, and was Hungarian champion for the third time in 2016 after 2001 and 2004. Gera ended his active career in Budapest in 2018.
National team
Gera played in the Hungarian national football team from 2002 to 2009 and played a total of 63 games in which he scored 18 goals. He played his first game on February 13, 2002 against Switzerland , when he came on the field as a substitute for Ákos Füzi in the 47th minute . On October 16, 2002 he scored, after his substitution for the second half, as a substitute for attacker Krisztián Kenesei , in the game against San Marino all three goals for his home country. On June 6, 2004 he managed a surprising away win with Hungary in the friendly against Germany , both goals scored Sándor Torghelle . He was never able to qualify for a major international tournament with the selection. He played his last international match for the time being on October 10, 2009 in the 3-0 defeat in Portugal . A few days later he announced his resignation from the national team. However, his status as a former international had only existed for a short time. After the national coach Erwin Koeman was replaced by Sándor Egervári , Gera returned to the team and played a game in the national team dress against England on August 11, 2010 .
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in the Hungarian squad. In the opening game, the 2-0 success against Austria , the 1-1 against Iceland and the third preliminary round game against Portugal , he was in the starting line-up. In the 3: 3 against Portugal Gera scored the interim 1: 0 and Hungary reached the round of 16 as group winners. They lost 4-0 to Belgium and were eliminated from the tournament. He played his 97th and actually last international match in the (repeated) 3-0 defeat (again) against Portugal on March 25, 2017.
