Konstantinos "Kostas" Mitroglou ( Greek Κωνσταντίνος Μήτρογλου , born March 12, 1988 in Kavala ) is a Greek football player who also has German citizenship . Since the 2017/18 season he has played in the Sturm for French club Olympique Marseille, primarily as a center forward .
origin
Mitroglou was born in Kavala in 1988 and immigrated to Germany with his family as a child . He grew up in Neukirchen-Vluyn on the Lower Rhine and in the Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia .
Career in the club
Mitroglou began his career in 1994 at TuS Preußen Vluyn . In 2001 he moved to SV Neukirchen , where he went through at least the C-youth of the club. In 2003 Mitroglou moved to MSV Duisburg as a B-youth . In 2005, Borussia Mönchengladbach signed him, where he was still active in youth until 2007 and scored a total of 38 goals in 35 games. At the age of 17 he was promoted to the second team , with which he was promoted to the Regionalliga West in summer 2006 . For the foals , he did not score a single time in 23 regional league games.
For the 2007/08 season he moved to Olympiacos Piraeus in his home country after good performance in the Greek U-21 national football team . According to media reports, the transfer fee was 200,000 euros. There he initially wore the number 22 and was reported by the club for the group stage of the Champions League . He played his first game in the Greek league on September 30, 2007 against Aris Saloniki . Mitroglou made his Champions League debut on December 11, 2007 in the home game against SV Werder Bremen , when he came into play in the 82nd minute for Darko Kovačević . In January 2011 he was loaned to the Greek first division club Panionios Athens until the end of the season and scored eight goals in eleven games. In the summer of 2011 he was loaned out again, this time for a year to league rivals Atromitos Athens . Mitroglou scored a total of 16 goals in 28 games and reached the Greek Cup final with Atromitos. After the loan contract expired, he finally returned to Piraeus. On October 2, 2013 Mitroglou scored all three goals for Olympiacos in the Champions League match against RSC Anderlecht (3-0). Mitroglou also scored three hat tricks after seven match days in the Greek championship .
On January 30, 2014 Mitroglou moved to the Premier League for Fulham FC . He signed a contract that ran until June 30, 2018. After the relegation of Fulham FC, Mitroglou returned to Olympiacos on August 31, 2014 until the end of the 2014/15 season . In August 2015 it was awarded to Benfica Lisbon .
Mitroglou has been under contract with the French first division club Olympique Marseille since August 2017 . On January 31, 2019, Galatasaray Istanbul announced the loan from Mitroglou. His loan contract runs until the end of the 2019/20 season. Mitroglou is the first Greek football player in Galatasaray's history. Galatasaray loaned Mitroglou to PSV Eindhoven during the 2019/20 season .
National team
With the U-19 of Greece , he took part in the U19 European Championship in 2007 . In the course of the tournament he became a top scorer with six goals and ended up with his team in second place. In the semi-final against Germany , he also scored a goal and was thus able to contribute to his country's 3-2 victory and the final.
On November 14, 2009 Mitroglou made his debut in the senior national team of Greece when he came on in the first leg of the relegation to the 2010 World Cup against Ukraine (0-0) in the 71st minute for Dimitrios Salpingidis . Mitroglou was nominated for the provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup. However , he did not make it into the final national team squad .
After Fernando Santos took over as coach of the national team, Mitroglou became a fixture in the Greek national team. Four years after his debut, he had to play again with the Greek selection for the 2014 World Cup . In the two games against Romania (3: 1, 1: 1) Mitroglou played a key role in Greece's successful qualification with three goals.
