Darío Ismael "Pipa" Benedetto (born May 17, 1990 in Berazategui ) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a striker for Olympique Marseille .

Career

Darío Benedetto started his career at Arsenal de Sarandí in 2008 . He was loaned to Defensa y Justicia in 2010 and to Gimnasia in 2011 , where he played 19 games and scored 11 goals. In the summer of 2013, Arsenal sold Benedetto to the Mexican club Club Tijuana . On July 19, he scored a hat trick on his league debut for the club in a 3-3 draw against Atlas Guadelajara . For Tijuana he scored a total of 21 goals in 43 league games.

On December 15, 2014, it was announced that Benedetto had signed a four-year contract with Club América . Although details of the transfer were not disclosed, it was believed that América paid $ 8 million for the player. He made his debut for America on January 10, 2015 in the opening game of Clausura, in a 3-2 win against Club León at the Estadio Azteca and provided the template for Oribe Peralta's second goal. He soon scored his first goal in a league game against UANL Tigres . With the club, he won the CONCACAF Champions League twice in a row from 2015 and was also the top scorer of the tournament with his first win and scored 3 goals in the final second leg against Montreal Impact .

On June 6, 2016 he moved back to Argentina to the Boca Junior . After initial problems, he became an important player and in 2017 won the Argentine Championship with and Boca and became the top scorer with 21 goals. In 2017 he was also named Argentina’s Footballer of the Year . The next year he was able to defend the league title with Boca, but was injured for most of the season. In 2018 he reached the final of the Copa Libertadores with Boca, which was lost 3-1 to River Plate . In the final game, he scored a goal for the interim 1: 1 equalization.

On August 5, 2019, Benedetto signed a four-year deal with Ligue 1 team Olympique Marseille for a reported fee of 14 million euros. Benedetto scored his first goal as a Marseille player in a league game against OGC Nice on August 28, 2019.

On August 27, 2017, Benedetto was appointed by coach Jorge Sampaoli for the first time for the 2018 World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Venezuela . He made his international debut against Venezuela on September 5, 2017, replacing Paulo Dybala as a substitute. The game ended 1-1.
